Dan Bongino announced on Wednesday that he is stepping down as deputy director of the FBI, ending a nine-month stint that was frequently overshadowed by conflict with Justice Department leaders and resistance within the bureau’s own ranks. The announcement brings an abrupt close to one of the most unconventional leadership chapters in the FBI’s recent history.

In a post on social media, Bongino said he will formally leave the position in January and expressed gratitude to President Donald Trump for what he described as the “opportunity to serve with purpose.” His departure follows months of reports describing strained relationships between Bongino and senior officials at the Justice Department, as well as unease among career FBI employees over his leadership style and political profile.

Earlier the same day, President Trump confirmed Bongino’s decision to step down, telling reporters that the former deputy director wanted to return to his previous career as a conservative media figure. Before joining the FBI, Bongino was best known as the host of a widely followed podcast and as a vocal supporter of Trump, a background that made his appointment both high-profile and controversial from the outset.

Bongino’s tenure was marked by persistent friction inside the bureau, where his outspoken views and outsider status reportedly clashed with the FBI’s traditionally insular culture. Critics argued that his presence blurred the line between law enforcement leadership and partisan politics, while supporters said he brought a necessary challenge to what they viewed as entrenched bureaucracy.
