The BRICS group of emerging economies marked the start of 2025 with significant expansions. On January 1, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Cuba, Bolivia, and Uganda became BRICS partner countries, while Indonesia officially joined as a full member on January 6. These additions signal the beginning of a new chapter in BRICS cooperation, underscoring its growing influence and commitment to the Global South.

Since its inception nearly 20 years ago, BRICS—comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—has evolved into a vital platform for promoting solidarity among developing nations. Today, BRICS nations account for nearly half of the global population, over 30 percent of global GDP, and more than 50 percent of global economic growth. The recent expansion demonstrates the appeal of the BRICS cooperation mechanism and its importance in shaping global economic and governance systems.

Rooted in multilateralism, fairness, and common development, BRICS is advancing peace and prosperity in the Global South. The bloc’s growth reflects the collective rise of these nations, which now drive global economic growth. A recent article from the Brazilian magazine Forum noted that BRICS led the world in economic growth in 2024, further shifting the center of economic gravity toward the Global South.

Despite skepticism and biases from some international quarters, BRICS remains committed to openness and inclusivity. It does not engage in bloc confrontation or target third parties, aiming instead to promote peaceful development, shared prosperity, and equitable global governance. Scholars have observed that while BRICS represents non-Western nations, it is not anti-Western, urging global cooperation to tackle shared challenges and build a just international order.

China has played a pivotal role in advancing BRICS cooperation, emphasizing peace, innovation, green development, and justice. It has positioned BRICS as a primary channel for strengthening Global South solidarity and reforming global governance. China’s vision includes fostering high-quality development and harmonious coexistence among civilizations while advocating for an inclusive and equal multipolar world.
