A new study conducted by researchers at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus has found that heavy cannabis use may have negative effects on working memory, a key cognitive function that aids in learning and understanding language. This large-scale study, which analyzed data from over 1,000 young adults aged 22 to 36, has raised concerns about the impact of regular cannabis use on memory and cognitive abilities.
Published in JAMA Network Open, the study shows that lifetime heavy cannabis users—those who used cannabis more than 1,000 times—had a notable reduction in brain activity during working memory tasks. Of those participants, 63% exhibited working memory issues, while 68% of recent cannabis users also demonstrated reduced brain activation during similar tasks.
Joshua L. Gowin, PhD, the study’s lead author and assistant professor in the Department of Radiology at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, stated, “The effects were small but reliable, so it won’t turn Einstein into Fred Flintstone, but it could add a few clouds into an otherwise clear sky.” The study suggests that while the link between cannabis use and memory problems is not overwhelmingly strong, the findings are significant enough to warrant attention.
The study also found that heavy cannabis use impacted brain regions responsible for attention, decision-making, and memory, such as the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and the anterior insula. These areas are crucial not only for memory but for other cognitive functions that help individuals navigate daily tasks and make informed decisions.
Dr. Gowin emphasized the importance of understanding the widespread effects of cannabis on the brain, noting that the cannabinoid system is widespread, and modulating it with products like THC could have various impacts on brain function. He hopes the results of this study will help people make informed choices about their health.
The study’s findings align with clinical observations. Dr. Clifford Segil, a neurologist at Providence Saint John’s Health Center, commented that heavy cannabis use often leads to memory problems, as seen in clinical practice. He expressed the need for further research, particularly on the impact of cannabis on driving ability and whether medical marijuana users face similar cognitive issues.
Dr. Jasdeep S. Hundal, a neuropsychologist at Hackensack Meridian Jersey Shore University Medical Center, also expressed concern over the study’s results. He noted that while cannabis is often seen as harmless or even beneficial for medical purposes, the study highlights its potential negative effects on brain function, particularly in areas like working memory and executive function. These findings, according to Dr. Hundal, should lead to more cautious and informed discussions between healthcare providers and patients, especially those at risk for Alzheimer’s disease or other memory-related conditions.
