Scientific institutions in China and Japan have announced a collaboration to enhance typhoon observation and research, as warming global temperatures threaten to make the powerful storms more destructive. The initiative will enable relay-style aerial missions to monitor typhoons spanning both nations’ regions, facilitating the collection and sharing of critical storm data.
Jie Tang, director of the Asia-Pacific Typhoon Collaborative Research Center (AP-TCRC) based in Shanghai, said the agreement with Yokohama National University’s Typhoon Science and Technology Research Center will allow closer coordination on storms near both countries. The AP-TCRC, funded by China, and the Shanghai Typhoon Institute under China’s national weather agency will conduct aerial surveillance missions to gather real-time data on typhoons approaching Chinese territory, Tang told Bloomberg following the announcement.
The five-year roadmap, signed last week, aims to strengthen international influence in typhoon research for both China and Japan. Scientists and meteorologists worldwide are increasingly focused on understanding these storms to improve forecasting, mitigate damages, and explore potential ways to influence their track and intensity.
With climate change making tropical cyclones, including typhoons and hurricanes, stronger and wetter, the need for coordinated, cross-border research has never been more urgent. This collaboration marks a significant step toward pooling resources and expertise to better predict and respond to these increasingly destructive natural events.
