China’s military announced that it is developing more than 10 experimental quantum cyber warfare tools, many of which are reportedly being tested in front-line operations. The disclosure, published by the official Science and Technology Daily, highlights Beijing’s push to integrate quantum computing, artificial intelligence, and cloud technology into its defense strategy.
The project is led by a supercomputing laboratory at the National University of Defence Technology and aims to process vast amounts of battlefield data in seconds, allowing commanders to make rapid decisions and optimize resource allocation. Officials also indicated that quantum sensing and positioning could enhance air defenses by detecting stealth aircraft that conventional radar systems may miss, while providing highly accurate navigation systems resistant to spoofing or jamming.
An unnamed officer cited by the newspaper said that “speed and change” were key factors in developing the new cyber weapons and emphasized that “to design a good weapon, one must first think about the form of the next war.” Liu Wei, a researcher at the PLA’s Information Support Force, added that the team is focused on “new models of battlefield awareness powered by cybersecurity” and is closely collaborating with front-line troops to align technological development with operational needs.
The report described how data collected over a year from multiple sources has been consolidated into unified situation maps to improve real-time decision-making. A senior figure in the quantum and supercomputing unit stressed the importance of maintaining sensitivity to operational requirements while deploying cutting-edge technologies.
Since its inception, the PLA unit has reportedly adapted to evolving warfare, technological shifts, and new adversaries, applying innovations in cybersecurity and information technology to meet combat demands. The newspaper noted that the research team is promoting dynamic tracking, data integration, and practical applications of emerging technologies to enhance China’s military readiness.
The disclosure signals a growing emphasis by Beijing on quantum technology as a strategic tool for both intelligence gathering and battlefield dominance, underscoring the military’s intent to leverage emerging scientific advances in future conflicts.
