China is preparing to expand its presence in global marine infrastructure markets by exporting advanced robotic systems designed to locate and protect undersea communication and power cables, according to state media reports. The technology is being positioned as part of a broader strategy to strengthen the country’s competitiveness in offshore engineering and marine equipment manufacturing.
The initiative, reported by the Science and Technology Daily, outlines plans to offer the technology to clients across Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. The move is presented as an effort to integrate Chinese-developed marine engineering solutions into global supply chains and expand their commercial adoption in international offshore projects.
The systems in question are specialized robots capable of detecting cables buried beneath the seabed and operating in deep-water and high-pressure marine environments. Developed by researchers at Dalian Jiaotong University, the machines are designed to locate submerged infrastructure with high precision, reportedly achieving positioning errors of less than 5 percent.
In addition to detection capabilities, the robots can also deposit sediment over exposed cables to protect them from environmental damage or external interference. According to the report, the systems are engineered to function continuously in challenging underwater conditions, including strong currents and depths of up to 300 meters.
Researchers involved in the project describe the system as a dual-sensor platform, designed to improve visibility and accuracy in environments where traditional inspection methods are limited. The development team highlighted the integration of multiple detection mechanisms intended to enhance reliability in complex seabed terrain.
The export push reflects a wider strategic effort by China to increase its role in global marine infrastructure services, an industry that includes subsea telecommunications networks, offshore energy systems, and undersea power transmission lines.
