A striking feature published by Times UK has drawn global attention and scepticism after it detailed the alleged use of a classified CIA system known as “Ghost Murmur,” a tool said to have helped locate a downed US airman in Iran by detecting his heartbeat from extreme distance. The report describes a dramatic rescue operation involving special forces, deception tactics, and what officials vaguely called “exquisite technologies,” but also highlights deep scientific doubts over whether such a system could exist in the form described.

According to the Times UK account, the incident centres on a two-man crew of an F-15E Strike Eagle that was shot down by an Iranian shoulder-launched missile, leaving one of the airmen stranded in hostile terrain. The surviving colonel reportedly spent two days evading search parties while trying to communicate his position using intermittent radio contact and a personal emergency beacon. However, he is said to have activated it sparingly out of fear that Iranian forces were monitoring rescue signals and actively hunting survivors across the mountainous region.

The most extraordinary claim in the report is that traditional search methods were ultimately supplemented by a classified intelligence capability dubbed Ghost Murmur. The system is described as a highly advanced sensing technology allegedly developed through collaboration with defence-linked research environments, including Lockheed Martin’s Skunk Works division, long associated with experimental aerospace innovation. In this narrative, CIA operatives inside Iran used the tool to isolate the faint biometric signature of the missing airman, filtering out environmental interference to detect his heartbeat across a distance reported to be as much as 40 miles.

The Times UK feature frames the rescue as part of a wider covert mission reportedly known as Operation Epic Fury. It claims that elite units, including Seal Team Six, were deployed after intelligence allegedly confirmed the airman’s location through what officials described only in vague terms as “exquisite technologies that no other intelligence service possesses.” CIA Director John Ratcliffe is quoted as hinting at the operation during a press appearance, describing the challenge as akin to finding “a single grain of sand in the middle of a desert,” a metaphor that has since become central to debate over whether the capability is real or exaggerated.

The alleged system, Ghost Murmur, is described in the report as relying on advanced quantum magnetometry combined with artificial intelligence to isolate human cardiac signals from background electromagnetic noise. In theory, the system would detect the magnetic fields produced by the heart and distinguish them from other environmental signals, even in contested terrain. However, the Times UK article also notes that independent scientific voices have strongly questioned whether such a capability could function at the distances claimed, particularly in an active military search zone filled with competing signals, machinery, and movement.

Scientific criticism cited in the report points out that while quantum magnetometers do exist and are capable of detecting extremely subtle biological signals at close range, their effectiveness decreases sharply with distance. Experts referenced by Times UK argue that detecting a heartbeat from tens of miles away would require overcoming fundamental physical limitations. The article quotes researchers who suggest that even under ideal conditions, the human heart’s magnetic field becomes barely detectable beyond a few centimetres, making long-range biometric tracking scientifically implausible with current understanding.

Despite these doubts, the Times UK feature notes that political figures in the United States appeared to reinforce the narrative surrounding the operation. US President Donald Trump is said to have commented on the CIA’s capabilities when questioned by reporters, praising intelligence efforts and suggesting that the United States possesses equipment “nobody has ever even thought about.” Meanwhile, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth was also mentioned in connection with the wider military coordination, although detailed operational confirmation from official defence channels has not been made public.

The report further suggests that the operation did not rely solely on advanced sensing technology but also involved extensive deception strategies aimed at misleading Iranian forces. It claims that intelligence units used cyber tools, including spyware systems similar to Pegasus developed by an Israeli-linked technology firm, to manipulate communications networks and create false narratives about the airman’s location. These tactics were reportedly intended to confuse the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), dispersing search efforts and enabling special forces to move in undetected.

According to the Times UK account, the deception campaign was designed to simulate the airman’s extraction via alternative routes, potentially involving staged convoy movements and falsified digital communications. The aim, it suggests, was to force Iranian search units to redeploy resources away from the mountainous area where the colonel was hiding. In parallel, airborne assets, including AH-6 Little Bird helicopters, were allegedly dispatched to extract the stranded serviceman once his position was confirmed.

However, despite the dramatic framing, the article emphasises that many elements of the story remain unverified and contested. Intelligence sources quoted within the report declined to confirm or deny the existence of Ghost Murmur, with one official stating only that if operations are conducted in secrecy, it is for strategic reasons. This ambiguity has fuelled speculation about whether the system is a genuine classified breakthrough or a narrative constructed to obscure more conventional intelligence methods used in the rescue.
