The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is raising alarm over what it describes as a “massive surge in attacks” against federal immigration officers since President Donald Trump’s return to office, citing an 830% increase in assaults on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents since January 21 compared to the same period last year.
Officials say the unprecedented wave of violence is being driven by increasingly hostile political rhetoric and direct incitement by elected officials.
“ICE law enforcement are succeeding in removing terrorists, murderers, pedophiles, and the most depraved among us from America’s communities,” said DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin. “Even as crazed rhetoric from gutter politicians is inspiring a massive increase in assaults against them.”
In a particularly disturbing incident this week, Representative Salud Carbajal (D-CA) allegedly displayed an ICE agent’s business card to a hostile crowd during a protest in California. According to the DHS, the action “put a target on his back and prompted the mob to attack him.” The ICE officer was reportedly struck by a rock and rushed to the emergency room, where he received multiple stitches.
The department’s report follows several other documented confrontations, including a May altercation at New Jersey’s Delaney Hall detention facility, where Representative LaMonica McIver (D-NJ) allegedly became involved in a violent encounter with ICE agents. McIver has been indicted on federal assault charges and has pleaded not guilty.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem called for bipartisan condemnation of the violence. “Politicians across the country, regardless of political stripe, must denounce these attacks,” she urged, specifically calling out California Governor Gavin Newsom for what she described as a failure to maintain order in his state.
California has emerged as a flashpoint in the escalating tension. Anti-ICE protests in early June descended into violent riots in several cities, prompting President Trump to deploy the National Guard. Governor Newsom denounced the move as a “federal takeover,” sparking a political standoff that led to further demonstrations across major cities including New York, Chicago, and Dallas.
DHS officials say ICE agents are now operating under heightened security protocols and are being advised to limit public exposure as threats continue to rise.
While Trump administration officials frame the violence as the result of dangerous political extremism, critics argue that the administration’s harsh immigration policies and inflammatory language have helped inflame tensions nationwide.
With the 2026 midterm elections on the horizon, the issue of immigration — and the safety of those tasked with enforcing it — is rapidly becoming one of the most contentious and volatile battlegrounds in American politics.
