Gold Shines Bright, But Is Silver About to Steal the Spotlight?

For now, gold continues to glitter. But savvy investors are keeping a close eye on silver—because when it plays catch-up, it tends to do so in spectacular fashion.

Silver and Gold

Gold may have been grabbing headlines with its record-breaking rally, but silver could be the precious metal poised for a breakout, according to a recent Wall Street Journal report.

Often viewed as a safe haven during financial turmoil, gold has once again lived up to its reputation, climbing an impressive 113% so far this decade—far outpacing the S&P 500’s 78% gain over the same period. Just this past year, gold has surged 41%, recently touching an all-time high before a slight pullback. Meanwhile, silver, typically the less glamorous sibling in the precious metals duo, has quietly gained 23%—still nearly quadrupling the S&P’s modest 6% return in that span.

But while gold continues to dominate during times of uncertainty, historical trends suggest that silver could be ready to shine next.

Analysts note that silver often lags behind gold in the early stages of financial distress but tends to catch up—sometimes dramatically—once the initial wave of fear recedes. That’s because silver straddles two worlds: it carries the safe-haven allure of a precious metal, yet its industrial applications make it more responsive to shifts in the global economy.

“The setup looks familiar,” said one market strategist. “We’ve seen this kind of gold-silver divergence before, and when silver moves, it tends to do so fast and with force.”

One key metric drawing attention is the gold-to-silver ratio, currently hovering around 98:1, a historically elevated level. This means it takes 98 ounces of silver to buy a single ounce of gold—a stark contrast to the long-term average closer to 60:1. Similar extremes were seen during the 2008 financial crisis and the 2020 COVID market panic, both of which preceded major silver rallies that outpaced gold’s gains.

With central banks still grappling with inflation, geopolitical tensions simmering, and investors hunting for hedges, some believe silver’s moment may be just around the corner.

“The market is telling us that silver is undervalued relative to gold,” one commodities analyst explained. “If history repeats, or even just rhymes, silver could be setting up for a breakout.”
