New archaeological discoveries in Shandong province, eastern China, suggest that parts of the Great Wall of China may be up to 300 years older than previously thought, dramatically reshaping the historical understanding of one of the world’s most iconic structures.
The findings, unearthed during recent excavations in the Changqing area, reveal that the Great Wall’s origins likely stretch back to the late Western Zhou Dynasty (1046 BC–771 BC) and the early Spring and Autumn Period (770 BC–476 BC). This predates earlier estimates that had placed the wall’s initial construction around the 7th century BC, with large-scale unification of its various segments traditionally attributed to the Qin Dynasty in the 3rd century BC.
These groundbreaking excavations challenge the long-held belief that the Great Wall was primarily a product of the later Warring States Period and subsequent dynastic consolidations. Instead, the evidence suggests that the wall was not a single, unified project but rather a collection of fortifications developed over centuries by different Chinese states to defend their territories from nomadic incursions from the Eurasian Steppe.
The archaeological team, led by Zhang Su from the Shandong Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, uncovered a wealth of historical artifacts during their extensive excavation of over 1,000 square meters. Among the discoveries were buried roads, ancient house foundations, trenches, ash pits, and fortified walls. These findings not only highlight the advanced engineering techniques of ancient China but also reveal the complexity and layered history behind the construction of the Great Wall.
One particularly well-preserved section, attributed to the Warring States Period (475 BC–221 BC), has been identified as the earliest known Great Wall structure discovered to date, according to Liu Zheng of the Chinese Society of Cultural Relics.
Beyond its role as a defensive barrier, new evidence also suggests that the Great Wall had strategic economic importance. Its proximity to the ancient city of Pingyin, frequently mentioned in historical texts, indicates that the wall was likely used not only to deter invasions but also to control trade routes and regulate transportation across early China.
Researchers employed a multidisciplinary approach to date these ancient sections, using techniques that analyzed traditional artifacts, as well as biological remains like plant materials and animal bones found at the site. These methods provided more accurate timelines and allowed historians to piece together a clearer picture of the wall’s early development.
The discoveries also shed new light on the evolutionary nature of the Great Wall. Ancient texts had previously suggested that the wall underwent numerous phases of construction, collapse, abandonment, and restoration. These latest excavations provide tangible evidence of this cyclical history, illustrating how different dynasties contributed to the wall’s expansion and fortification over time.
This revelation could significantly shift both academic and public perceptions of Chinese history, adding depth to the understanding of early Chinese state-building, military strategy, and architectural innovation.
As crowds of tourists continue to walk the more famous sections of the Great Wall near Beijing, these newly uncovered ancient fortifications in Shandong serve as a stark reminder that the wall’s history is far older and more complex than previously imagined.
