A groundbreaking innovation is transforming classroom learning at the Bhubanananda Odisha School of Engineering (BOSE) in eastern India. The school has introduced an AI-powered teacher, a robot designed to assist students with engineering fundamentals and answer their questions fluently.
The Pi Robot, developed by three final-year students at BOSE, was showcased in a vibrant classroom setting on November 22. Draped in a traditional Indian saree, the robot stood in a glass enclosure while students engaged with it, eagerly asking questions. The AI teacher responded swiftly, demonstrating its capability to enhance the learning experience.
The development of this AI teacher marks a significant achievement in educational technology. Principal Hrusikesh Mohanty praised the efforts of the student team, highlighting their dedication to designing an AI platform, creating a voice recognition system, and building the robot from the ground up. “This project is a testament to the creativity and technical skills of our students,” said Mohanty. “It also represents a major step toward integrating artificial intelligence into practical learning at our institution.”
The AI teacher, which runs for five to six hours on a single charge, is powered by ChatGPT and is designed to answer students’ queries in real-time, helping them clear doubts about various engineering topics. The team spent six months developing their version of the robot, using custom-made electrical and mechanical components. This innovation follows in the footsteps of “Iris,” India’s first AI teacher, which was developed in Kerala.
