India, Sri Lanka, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are poised to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly develop the Eastern Province’s Trincomalee as an energy hub. The MoU, expected to be finalized during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to Sri Lanka, aims to establish the region as a major energy farm, fostering regional cooperation in the energy sector.

During the visit, Prime Minister Modi is also set to lay the foundation stone for an Indian-invested solar power project in Sampur, Trincomalee. This solar initiative is seen as a major step forward in Sri Lanka’s renewable energy efforts, leveraging India’s expertise and investments in clean energy.

Along with the energy development agreements, an MoU between Sri Lanka and India will focus on enhancing bilateral energy cooperation. The agreement is expected to include the vital connection of electricity grids between the two countries, which could significantly improve energy security and reliability for both nations.

In addition to energy matters, the leaders are also set to discuss security cooperation. However, the MoU currently under negotiation between India and Sri Lanka on security issues is reported to be less detailed than the significant Indo-Lanka Agreement of 1987. Sources indicate that the new agreement will largely focus on strengthening exchanges, including joint security training, between the two nations.

Further strengthening the bilateral relationship, India will provide Rs. 2.5 billion in assistance for 33 development projects in Sri Lanka’s Eastern Province. These projects are aimed at boosting infrastructure, healthcare, and overall economic development in the region.

Additionally, an MoU focusing on health and pharmaceuticals will be signed, enhancing cooperation in the medical sector between the two countries.
