Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei, has called for firm action against individuals he described as “rioters” or foreign-linked elements seeking to exploit public protests, while affirming that legitimate grievances must be addressed. Speaking on Saturday, January 3, during a ceremony marking the birth anniversary of Imam Ali (PBUH) and the sixth anniversary of the martyrdom of Lt. General Qassem Soleimani, Khamenei highlighted the need for national unity and vigilance against what he termed the “soft war” waged by foreign adversaries.
The Leader acknowledged recent gatherings of bazaar merchants protesting the decline in the national currency, saying their concerns are “valid” and recognized by government authorities seeking solutions. However, he warned that outsiders and provoked individuals using protests to spread anti-Islamic or anti-government slogans are unacceptable. “Protest is legitimate, but protest is different from riot,” Khamenei stated, urging dialogue with demonstrators while insisting that rioters must be dealt with decisively.
Khamenei framed the “soft war” as a campaign of deception, rumor, and disinformation aimed at weakening Iranian morale and undermining public confidence. He referenced the 12-day war of June 2025 as evidence of foreign duplicity, arguing that the United States had simultaneously engaged in negotiations while preparing for conflict. He warned that billions of dollars have been spent to propagate false narratives inside Iran via satellite TV networks and media channels.
Highlighting Iran’s domestic achievements, the Supreme Leader praised the launch of three homegrown satellites in a single day and advances in aerospace, biotechnology, medicine, nanotechnology, and defense industries. He criticized both foreign actors and some domestic voices for downplaying these accomplishments, emphasizing the role of Iran’s youth in driving progress despite sanctions.
In commemorating Lt. General Qassem Soleimani, Khamenei lauded his faith, sincerity, and action, noting that the commander had actively engaged in multiple arenas—from confronting sedition in Kerman to leading the IRGC Quds Force in defending holy shrines and fighting ISIL. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) reaffirmed on the anniversary of Soleimani’s martyrdom that revenge against those responsible for his assassination remains a central objective. The IRGC highlighted the enduring influence of Soleimani’s “school of thought” across the region and the consolidation of the Islamic resistance movement under his legacy.
Khamenei further stated that the defeat of adversaries, including the US and Israel, and the ongoing global “Free Palestine” movement reflect the continuing impact of Soleimani and the resistance front. He concluded that Iran will not retreat in the face of foreign threats, asserting confidence in popular support and divine guidance to maintain the nation’s security and sovereignty.
