Montana National Guard leaders meet Sri Lankan Ambassador Mahinda Samarasinghe

Montana welcomed Sri Lankan Ambassador Mahinda Samarasinghe in a visit that highlights the growing partnership between the U.S. state and the island nation. The Montana National Guard, through the State Partnership Program, has worked closely with Sri Lanka for years, creating a foundation of trust that extends far beyond geography. According to officials, this relationship was tested and strengthened during Cyclone Ditwah, when Montana’s engineers, medical professionals, and disaster response leaders collaborated with Sri Lankan counterparts to provide rapid relief and recovery assistance.

The ambassador’s visit reflects an effort to broaden cooperation across multiple sectors. Beyond disaster preparedness, the partnership now aims to foster collaboration in government, education, and industry. Montana officials emphasized that the State Partnership Program is not simply a bureaucratic framework, but a commitment to readiness, resilience, and mutual trust. By engaging in joint training exercises, knowledge sharing, and collaborative planning, the two partners aim to build long-term capabilities that benefit both regions.

For Montana, this initiative has practical and symbolic significance. Officials say it enhances the state’s preparedness for emergencies while exposing local leaders and communities to international perspectives and expertise. The engagement also reflects what participants call “the Montana Way” – a culture of responsibility, collaboration, and proactive problem solving that guides both domestic and international efforts.
