A groundbreaking study from Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston has found that consuming processed red meat is linked to an increased risk of cognitive decline and dementia. The research, published in Neurology, sheds new light on the potential dangers of processed meats and their impact on brain health.
Processed meats, including bacon, sausages, hot dogs, and salami, have long been associated with various health risks, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers. However, this new study underscores the threat these foods may pose to cognitive function as well.
The study, which followed over 133,000 participants for up to 43 years, found that individuals who consumed larger amounts of processed red meat had a 13% higher risk of developing dementia compared to those who ate less. The study participants were divided into three groups based on their processed meat consumption, with the high consumption group eating 0.25 servings or more per day.
“The findings highlight the significant impact of dietary habits on brain health and suggest that processed red meat consumption is a modifiable risk factor for dementia,” said Yuhan Li, MS, the first author of the study. “With the growing global burden of dementia and the lack of a cure, understanding the relationship between diet and brain health can help develop evidence-based dietary guidelines.”
The study also explored how processed meat consumption affects subjective cognitive decline, which refers to a person’s perception of their cognitive abilities. The researchers found that those who ate processed meats daily had a 14% higher risk of experiencing subjective cognitive decline.
More encouragingly, the study revealed that substituting processed red meat with healthier alternatives such as nuts, legumes, fish, or chicken could lower the risk of dementia. For example, swapping processed meat for nuts and legumes was associated with a 19% lower dementia risk, fish with a 28% lower risk, and chicken with a 16% lower risk.
These findings suggest that simple dietary changes, such as reducing processed meat intake and choosing nutrient-dense alternatives, may help protect brain health and reduce the risk of cognitive decline.
Dr. Jasmin Dao, a pediatric and adult neurologist, emphasized the importance of diet in cognitive function. “What we eat affects our brain’s cognitive processing — motor control, language, problem-solving, and memory,” she said. “Making good diet choices is an actionable way to improve our brain health and provide neuroprotection to the aging brain.”
Monique Richard, a registered dietitian nutritionist, also provided tips for reducing processed meat intake. “Alternative protein sources may include pulses (beans, peas, and lentils), nuts, seeds, and cold-water fatty fish like salmon or sardines,” she suggested. “Health is typically optimized somewhere in the middle, and a registered dietitian can help you find your ‘middle.'”
