Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has warned that the United States is suffering a “great loss” as growing numbers of Chinese researchers and academics, educated at top U.S. institutions, are returning to China rather than building careers in America—part of a widening brain drain exacerbated by geopolitical tensions.
Speaking in Beijing during a group interview on Tuesday, Huang said, “It’s an enormous loss for America when the brightest minds decide to come to you for education and decide to go home.” His comments, reported by the South China Morning Post, highlight a growing concern within the tech sector about the long-term consequences of strained U.S.-China relations.
Huang, who is in China for the China International Supply Chain Expo—his third visit this year—said he is happy for Chinese researchers returning to their homeland, but cautioned that their departure reflects deeper issues in the U.S. research and innovation environment.
“I’m also happy they go home, because that’s where they’re from,” he added. “But I hope that the United States continues to be a country where we can pursue our American dream.”
Born in Taiwan and raised in the United States, Huang spoke personally about the opportunities he found in America as an immigrant, calling the country a place that made his success—and that of Nvidia—possible.
The semiconductor giant, which recently became the first company to exceed a $4 trillion market valuation, announced Tuesday that it would resume sales of its H20 AI chip in China after receiving U.S. government approval. The H20, designed specifically for China under export restrictions, is a scaled-down version of Nvidia’s most powerful chip used in artificial intelligence applications.
Huang cited China’s “vibrant” market as a key factor luring talent back to the mainland. “Every time I come here, there’s so much energy and excitement and dynamism, and so much opportunity for young entrepreneurs, so many start-up companies everywhere,” he said.
The South China Morning Post notes that the U.S. has been sending mixed signals on visa policies under President Donald Trump’s second term, further disincentivizing international students. The administration has also cut research funding and revoked visas, moves that analysts say have chilled the academic environment for foreign researchers.
High-profile Chinese researchers who recently returned home include statistician She Yiyuan, renowned mathematician Yitang Zhang, battery scientist Zhou Jianbin, and neuroscientist Dan Yang.
Huang emphasized the need for cooperation between the U.S. and China in the rapidly advancing field of AI. He noted that half the world’s AI researchers are now based in China and praised the country’s openness with open-source AI development.
“Because this technology is so capable, so powerful, we have to make sure that we share with each other ideas—not only how to improve the technology, but also how to keep the technology safe,” Huang said.
He also highlighted China’s fast-growing AI landscape, citing leading models such as DeepSeek, Alibaba’s Qwen, and Moonshot AI’s Kimi as examples of China’s innovation strength. Nvidia’s H20 chips, he said, are “really ideal” for the computing demands these models require.
“It is excellent that China advances AI technology in open source,” Huang added. “This way, you can have the global scientific community scrutinise the technology because it’s completely transparent. That’s the best way to keep it safe.”
Calling for renewed collaboration, he concluded: “International cooperation, especially in important technologies, is more vital than ever.”
