OpenAI has launched a new initiative aimed at improving cybersecurity across the open source software ecosystem by helping maintainers identify and fix vulnerabilities in their projects.
The initiative, called “Patch the Planet,” will bring together OpenAI and cybersecurity company Trail of Bits to support open source developers in reviewing code, addressing security issues, and strengthening software defenses. The name references the phrase “Hack the Planet” from the 1995 film “Hackers.”
Under the program, security engineers from Trail of Bits will work directly with open source maintainers to review potential code problems. OpenAI said its own security tools, including Codex Security, will be used to assist with identifying and addressing vulnerabilities.
“Many maintainers are already being asked to sort through more reports, more quickly, with the same limited time and resources,” OpenAI said in announcing the initiative. The company said the program is designed to reduce the workload on maintainers by having security engineers review findings before they are delivered, help develop patches and tests, and create reusable security workflows for future improvements.
The initiative is focused on a long-standing challenge within open source software: projects that form the foundation of much of the commercial software industry often operate with limited resources and decentralized oversight. Security weaknesses in widely used open source components can affect large numbers of downstream applications and organizations.
A major example of those risks was the Log4j vulnerability, which exposed security concerns in a widely used open source utility and affected software systems that depended on it.
OpenAI’s announcement comes as artificial intelligence tools are increasingly being used in cybersecurity. Some security tools can automatically identify weaknesses in software code, raising concerns that the same capabilities could also be used by attackers to discover vulnerabilities and create exploits more efficiently.
The company’s approach with Patch the Planet focuses on using AI-assisted technology as a defensive tool by helping maintainers find and resolve security problems before they can be exploited. Trail of Bits engineers will provide direct support by reviewing issues, assisting with fixes, and helping projects improve their long-term security practices.
OpenAI did not provide details on the long-term scale or expansion plans for the initiative. The company’s announcement described Patch the Planet as a way to support open source maintainers who face increasing security demands while working with limited resources.
The launch places OpenAI among technology companies seeking to shape the role of artificial intelligence in cybersecurity, using automated tools not only to identify risks but also to help strengthen the software systems that underpin modern technology.
