Opera Unveils AI-Powered Browser ‘Neon’ Designed to Perform Tasks for Users

Opera has announced a new browser called Opera Neon, built around artificial intelligence capabilities designed to go beyond traditional web browsing by performing tasks on behalf of users—including shopping, filling out forms, and even writing code.

Currently available only through a waitlist, Opera Neon will eventually launch under a subscription model, though the company has not yet disclosed pricing details.

At the core of the new browser are three features that aim to redefine the user experience: Chat, Do, and Make. The Chat function serves as a built-in chatbot interface that helps users search the web, ask questions, and gather deeper insights from the pages they’re browsing.

Do is powered by Opera’s previously announced Browser Operator AI agent, which runs locally in the browser. It’s designed to autonomously handle tasks like completing online forms or managing trip bookings—actions that typically require user input.

The third feature, Make, takes things further. Opera claims it enables users to generate websites, games, code snippets, reports, and more through text prompts. These AI workflows are processed via a virtual machine in the cloud, meaning users can queue tasks and allow Neon to work even while offline. The browser also supports multitasking, letting users initiate several automated tasks at once.

While the features promise a leap in browser utility, skepticism remains. AI applications with similar ambitions have often fallen short of expectations in real-world usage. And Opera isn’t alone in this race—other tech companies are also pushing forward with AI-powered browser agents. The Browser Company teased its own AI-driven interface last December, and Google is reportedly developing agent-based tools that can not only deliver search results but also complete tasks for users.

Opera’s move reflects a broader industry trend toward embedding intelligent agents directly into user platforms, with the aim of making digital interactions more seamless and autonomous. However, the true test will come when users get hands-on access and see whether the AI lives up to its promise.
