UK Prime Minister and Labour Party leader Keir Starmer will make his first official visit to India on October 8, at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs announced. The leaders are scheduled to meet in Mumbai to discuss the progress of the India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, which aims to deepen cooperation across multiple sectors.
The visit will also include engagements with business and industry leaders, following a free trade agreement struck between the UK and India in July during Modi’s visit to London. The agreement aims to reduce tariffs and trade barriers, enhancing economic collaboration between the two nations.
Starmer and Modi are expected to attend the Global Fintech Fest in Mumbai, highlighting the growing focus on technology and financial innovation in bilateral relations.
Starmer’s trip follows a brief interruption to his schedule after he had to cut short a visit to a European summit in Denmark due to a terrorist attack at a synagogue in Manchester last Thursday. Observers note that the India visit presents an opportunity for Starmer to strengthen ties with a key international partner while promoting UK trade and investment abroad.
