As cryptocurrency continues to grow in popularity, so too does the rise of scams targeting new investors. Gabriele Asaro, Head of SEO and Research at crypto onramp platform Instaxchange.com, has issued a warning alongside practical advice to help users avoid falling victim to fraudulent schemes in this evolving digital space.
One common scam involves pump-and-dump schemes, where fraudsters artificially inflate a cryptocurrency’s value through hype, only to sell off their shares at a profit, leaving other investors with significant losses. Meme coins, often subject to viral popularity, are frequent targets of these manipulative tactics.
Romance scams have also infiltrated the crypto world, contributing to over $185 million in reported losses between 2021 and 2022. Fraudsters build relationships under false pretenses, asking for money to cover fabricated expenses. Similarly, investment scams, promising unrealistically high returns, have cost victims $575 million in the same timeframe.
To combat these threats, Asaro emphasizes:
- Never send crypto to strangers—cryptocurrency transactions are irreversible.
- Verify contact sources—scammers often impersonate companies or public figures. Double-check URLs and email addresses before engaging.
- Avoid and report blackmail attempts, which use fear to extort payments.
Asaro concludes with a reminder: “Crypto can be safe if you stay vigilant. Verify sources, research investments, and never send money to someone you haven’t met in person.” While the digital currency market holds immense potential, investors must remain cautious to protect themselves from scams in this fast-paced industry.
