What began as a surfing holiday on France’s Atlantic coast ended with smoke-filled skies, roads closed by advancing flames and an urgent escape from one of the country’s most destructive wildfire emergencies. For German climate scientist Stefan Rahmstorf, the experience offered a deeply personal encounter with the type of extreme event he has spent decades studying.
In an interview published by Die Zeit, Rahmstorf described the surreal progression of events that unfolded during his stay in Lacanau, a popular seaside resort near Bordeaux, where devastating forest fires rapidly transformed a summer holiday into an evacuation.
Rahmstorf and his partner had travelled to the French coast to surf when, on Wednesday, they noticed a plume of smoke rising above the ocean. According to reports cited by Die Zeit, investigators now believe the fire was almost certainly triggered during maintenance work by electricity grid operator Enedis, when sparks from a brush cutter ignited vegetation that had been left dangerously dry after months without sufficient rainfall.
From the beach, the pair watched the smoke column grow steadily larger as it stretched across the coastline and out over the Atlantic Ocean. Although the fire initially remained some distance away, its potential to spread was immediately apparent given the intense heat and strong winds.
Yet what struck Rahmstorf most was the contrast between the growing danger and the apparent normality of life on the beach. Lacanau, internationally known for its surfing conditions, continued to attract swimmers and surfers despite the smoke-darkened sky overhead. Holidaymakers largely remained in the water, hoping the blaze would remain limited.
One image from those first hours has stayed with him more vividly than any other. Despite ash falling from the sky and thick smoke hanging over the sea, lifeguards raised the green flag signalling safe swimming conditions because there were no dangerous currents. Black flakes settled across the sand while smoke drifted over the beach, creating what Rahmstorf described as an almost surreal contradiction between ordinary beach life and an unfolding natural disaster.
The situation changed dramatically when shifting winds redirected the fire towards Lacanau. Within minutes, the sunlight disappeared behind an expanding cloud of smoke, bathing the landscape in an orange glow. Rahmstorf later compared the scene to standing on Mars.
Photographs he posted on social media documenting the extraordinary conditions prompted some viewers to question whether the images had been created using artificial intelligence. According to Rahmstorf, the disbelief reflected how rapidly environmental conditions are changing during the climate crisis, producing scenes that can appear almost unreal despite being entirely genuine.
Even then, he and his partner hesitated before leaving. It was only while walking through Lacanau on Friday evening that they sensed how dramatically circumstances had deteriorated. The town had become eerily quiet, with empty streets and only scattered groups of people preparing to depart. The atmosphere reminded him of the COVID-19 lockdowns, as residents and visitors quietly assessed whether it was time to leave.
Their decision ultimately came after concerns that they might be unable to reach Bordeaux in time for their booked train to Paris. By then, the fire had already reached the outskirts of Lacanau and neighbouring communities were being evacuated. With the main road closed because of the advancing flames, they were forced to travel by taxi along a lengthy alternative route before eventually reaching Bordeaux safely.
The regional capital itself was far from untouched. Traffic was heavily congested as tens of thousands of people sought refuge in the city. Even there, smoke blanketed the skyline and permeated hotel rooms, leaving the air thick with the smell of burning vegetation.
For Rahmstorf, whose scientific career at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research has focused on understanding the consequences of climate change, the experience inevitably prompted reflection on whether increasingly frequent disasters are changing public awareness.
He admitted that, for a moment, he believed such events might finally convince political leaders and societies to recognise the scale of the climate challenge. Yet he also recalled having felt similar optimism more than two decades earlier after the catastrophic Elbe floods in 2002, only to see limited political progress despite the devastating European heatwave of 2003, which claimed around 70,000 lives.
Although international agreements such as the Paris Climate Agreement have since established global climate targets, Rahmstorf argued in the interview that progress has fallen well short of what scientists believe necessary. In his assessment, the internationally agreed objective of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius has already become unattainable, while continued political delays risk contributing to increasingly severe floods, droughts and wildfires.
Drawing directly upon his experience in France, Rahmstorf described how the holiday had already been marked by oppressive heat before the unprecedented fires erupted. He argued that public debate too often focuses on coping with rising temperatures through measures such as air conditioning rather than addressing the emissions driving climate change.
At the same time, he acknowledged the importance of adaptation. French firefighters, he noted, have begun speaking of a new era of firefighting as extreme blazes become more difficult to contain. Scientists have long urged governments to strengthen preparedness for climate-related disasters, he said, but adaptation has practical limits if global temperatures continue to rise significantly.
Rahmstorf warned that a world approaching three degrees of warming would likely produce increasingly unfamiliar and overwhelming phenomena. He pointed to the wildfire near Bordeaux as an example, describing a blaze powerful enough to generate its own weather systems and even lightning beneath its smoke clouds.
Addressing comparisons with earlier wildfire seasons, Rahmstorf did not deny that major fires have occurred in the past. Instead, he argued that the pattern is changing. According to the interview, the Bordeaux region experienced another significant wildfire as recently as 2022, yet this year’s fires have proved even more severe. He maintained that the relationship between climate-related drought and increasingly intense wildfires has been firmly established through scientific research.
Rahmstorf’s account, as presented by Die Zeit, illustrates how the effects of major environmental disasters are no longer confined to scientific reports or statistical projections. They are increasingly becoming part of ordinary daily life, disrupting holidays, forcing evacuations and transforming familiar landscapes within hours.
