In a recent feature published by the German newspaper Die Zeit, seven thinkers from fields as varied as artificial intelligence, philosophy, architecture, medicine and law were identified as voices capable of shaping how humanity understands the next decade. Some are already internationally celebrated figures, while others are only beginning to enter mainstream debate. Together, they reflect a growing belief that the world’s biggest crises can no longer be solved within isolated disciplines.

The individuals profiled by Die Zeit are united not by ideology but by method. Each attempts to bridge gaps between science, politics, ethics and culture in order to explain problems that increasingly seem too large or too interconnected for traditional institutions to manage alone. Their work speaks to a broader global hunger for guidance in an age marked by uncertainty, misinformation and accelerating change.

Among the most influential is Hannah Ritchie, a sustainability researcher at the University of Oxford whose work has become central to contemporary climate discussions. Born in 1993, Ritchie has gained international recognition for combining environmental science with statistical analysis to challenge the fatalism that often dominates climate discourse. As lead researcher for the influential platform “Our World in Data,” she has built a reputation for translating overwhelming global crises into measurable trends that ordinary people can understand.

Ritchie’s rise reflects a broader cultural shift away from apocalyptic climate narratives toward evidence-based optimism. She has spoken openly about once believing that humanity might not survive the climate crisis, only to later discover through data that substantial progress has already been made in areas such as renewable energy, emissions reductions and public health. Rather than dismissing the severity of ecological destruction, she argues that accurate data can help societies distinguish between solvable problems and irreversible catastrophes. Her work carries echoes of the late Swedish statistician Hans Rosling, whose presentations transformed complex development data into compelling visual stories about human progress.

If Ritchie seeks to restore hope through numbers, legal scholar Katharina Pistor is attempting to confront capitalism through philosophy and law. The Columbia University professor argues that capitalism is not simply an economic system but a legal one, built through contracts, property rights and state-backed frameworks that allow private interests to dominate public life. In her recent work, she examines how modern legal systems enable capital to absorb public goods while remaining formally legitimate.

Pistor believes democracies are increasingly weakened by the inability of states to regulate private power effectively. Yet unlike many critics of global capitalism, she does not advocate abandoning the legal system altogether. Instead, she calls for a reinvention of law based on moral and philosophical principles centered on human dignity and collective wellbeing. Drawing inspiration from philosopher Martha Nussbaum and economist Amartya Sen, Pistor argues that societies must rebuild legal frameworks around what human beings genuinely need to flourish. In a political climate where institutions are increasingly mistrusted, her work reflects a growing international effort to reconnect democracy with ethical foundations.

Architecture, too, has become a site of global political imagination through the work of Francis Kéré, the Burkina Faso-born architect whose projects blend traditional African building techniques with modern engineering. Winner of the prestigious Pritzker Prize, often described as architecture’s equivalent of the Nobel Prize, Kéré has become one of the world’s most influential designers by rejecting the assumption that technological innovation must erase local traditions.

His breakthrough came through the construction of a school in his home village, built largely from locally produced clay bricks rather than imported concrete. The project was designed collaboratively with residents, reinforcing communal identity while introducing subtle innovations such as elevated roofing systems that naturally cool interiors through airflow. The result was both environmentally sustainable and socially transformative.

Kéré’s philosophy challenges the globalized aesthetic that has dominated architecture for decades. He argues that tradition is no longer tied exclusively to geography but instead travels through memory, migration and cultural exchange. Now teaching in Germany while building projects across continents, he has become a symbol of how local knowledge can reshape global debates about sustainability and urban design.

Few fields embody the anxieties and ambitions of the future more than artificial intelligence, and few figures have shaped the field more profoundly than Stanford professor Fei-Fei Li. Best known as the creator of ImageNet, the massive image database that revolutionized machine learning in the 2010s, Li helped teach early AI systems how to recognize objects visually. That breakthrough laid the foundation for today’s powerful image-generation technologies.

But Li’s current work moves beyond image recognition toward something even more ambitious: teaching machines to understand the three-dimensional structure of reality itself. Through her company World Labs and her leadership at Stanford’s Human-Centered AI Institute, she is developing what researchers call “world models” — systems capable of interpreting space, movement and physical environments in ways that resemble human perception.

Many experts believe such advances could bring artificial intelligence closer to artificial general intelligence, or AGI, in which machines develop broader reasoning capabilities beyond narrow tasks. While current demonstrations remain imperfect, Li’s research has already shifted the direction of AI discourse globally. In an era increasingly dominated by fears surrounding automation and machine autonomy, her work suggests that the next frontier of intelligence may depend less on language and more on embodied understanding of the physical world.

Medical researcher Chiara Herzog is similarly attempting to redefine how humanity thinks about the body, particularly the female body. A bioinformatician currently working between King’s College London and Cambridge University, Herzog focuses on aging, disease prediction and women’s health through the study of epigenetics — the biological markers that influence how genes behave over time.

Her research reflects a growing awareness that modern medicine has historically overlooked female biology in clinical studies. Herzog argues that scientists still understand remarkably little about how women age, including the long-term effects of hormones, menopause and immune-system differences. By analyzing epigenetic patterns, her team seeks not only to predict disease risk but also to develop earlier and less invasive diagnostic tools. One such innovation is a cancer screening method for uterine cancer that could reduce the need for painful biopsies.

Unlike the celebrity-driven “longevity” industry that often promises immortality through expensive treatments, Herzog’s work emphasizes extending healthy life rather than life itself. Her calm, evidence-based communication style has also made her an increasingly influential public voice in medical science.

Questions of power and surveillance dominate the work of Azadeh Akbari, a scholar of digital authoritarianism whose personal experiences in Iran deeply shaped her research. After working as a journalist in Tehran and experiencing state monitoring firsthand, Akbari began exploring how digital technologies transform both state control and corporate influence.

Now a professor at Goethe University Frankfurt, she studies surveillance systems, smart cities and the geopolitical consequences of digital transformation. For Akbari, countries like Iran are not isolated exceptions but warning signs for the future of global governance. Technologies initially associated with freedom and connectivity have increasingly become tools for monitoring populations, controlling information and consolidating political power.

Her work has become especially relevant as major technology companies assume roles traditionally associated with governments. Akbari argues that the central political question of the coming decade may no longer be how citizens protect themselves from the state, but what the state itself becomes when corporate platforms and billionaire tech executives wield enormous geopolitical influence.

The final thinker highlighted by Die Zeit is literary scholar Anna Kornbluh, whose work examines what she calls the crisis of immediacy in modern life. In her widely discussed book “Immediacy, or The Style of Too Late Capitalism,” Kornbluh argues that societies have lost the ability to maintain distance from constant streams of information, emotion and crisis.

According to Kornbluh, digital culture has eroded institutions that once mediated public life, including political parties, labor unions and traditional media. Social media feeds, direct communication and hyper-personalized experiences have replaced slower forms of collective reflection. The result is a society trapped in perpetual urgency, where crises appear endless and meaningful action feels increasingly impossible.

Yet Kornbluh does not offer despair as her conclusion. Instead, she advocates rediscovering slowness, complexity and institutional stability through literature, art and political organization. By revisiting the layered narratives of authors such as Charles Dickens and Emily Brontë, she argues that societies can recover the intellectual patience necessary to confront large-scale systems and collective problems.

The seven thinkers profiled by Die Zeit represent a striking portrait of the intellectual battles likely to define the coming decade. Their work suggests that humanity’s greatest challenges — from climate collapse and AI to inequality and democratic decline — will not be solved through technology or politics alone. Instead, the future may depend on rebuilding connections between data and ethics, science and philosophy, innovation and human experience.
