At the D-8 summit in Cairo, the interim leader of Bangladesh, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, has made waves by calling for the resolution of long-standing issues stemming from the 1971 separation of East Pakistan. During a meeting with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Yunus expressed a strong desire to settle these historic grievances, a statement that is bound to raise controversial discussions between the two nations.
While diplomatic relations between Bangladesh and Pakistan had remained chilly for decades, especially under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina, recent political shifts in Dhaka have led to an unexpected thaw. Yunus, who now serves as Bangladesh’s chief adviser, stressed that resolving the contentious past would allow both countries to “move forward.” His call for reconciliation is being seen as a pivotal moment in bilateral relations, potentially challenging years of cold diplomacy.
The meeting between Yunus and Sharif was also marked by a mutual emphasis on the importance of trade and cultural ties, with the two leaders highlighting the positive developments in recent years, including improved travel and trade facilitation. Pakistan, in particular, expressed optimism about tapping into Bangladesh’s growing markets, eyeing sectors such as chemicals, leather goods, and IT for increased economic cooperation.
Yunus also reiterated his commitment to revive the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (Saarc), an initiative that has long been stalled due to tensions between Islamabad and New Delhi. His declaration of reactivating the regional body as a “top priority” was a notable moment at the summit, signaling Bangladesh’s shift in focus toward regional cooperation, despite historical animosities.
On the global stage, PM Shehbaz continued his diplomatic outreach, meeting with leaders from Iran and Turkey. His discussions with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian focused on enhancing economic ties and operationalizing border markets, while also seeking support for Pakistan’s BRICS membership. In talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the two leaders discussed boosting economic cooperation, particularly in IT, agriculture, and green technologies, with an eye on achieving a $5 billion bilateral trade target.
However, it was his comments on the ongoing Gaza conflict that made the most significant impact at the summit. PM Shehbaz’s call for an urgent ceasefire in Gaza, as well as peace in Lebanon, resonated deeply with the international community, as he stressed the need for global peace and stability. His plea for a ceasefire in these volatile regions serves as a stark reminder of the broader geopolitical issues at play in the Middle East, overshadowing the summit’s focus on youth empowerment and small and medium enterprises.

Bangladesh’s unlawful, illegal and unconstitutional puppet government led by Dr. Yunus – installed by America’s dreaded deep state CIA on 5 August 2024 in collusion with Pakistani direful ISI, Bangladesh army and horrendous local anti-Bangladesh liberation forces, in other words, extremum right-winger Islamist Jihadists – their only job is to put people of AL and pro-liberation people behind the bar to inflict punishment, demolish all achievements of our glorified Bangladesh that we attained at the bay of blood in 1971, make younger generation of people as impudent to the core, make Bangladesh a Talibani stylus res Republica, a Banana Republic. They do not have any other functions! Terrible!! Horrific!!! Utterly unacceptable.
The hawkish Dr. Yunus has been sitting with Pakistani PM, saying to resolve the long-standing unresolved issues, but he didn’t say clearly what are these unresolved issues. I have read his messages in both local and foreign media, but nowhere his communicating with the Pakistani side carried any substance! But we have long-standing pending issues with Pakistan…
He has, rather, made our tested friend India since 1971 as our foe. He and his mango-twigs are playing blaze up with people of AL and pro-liberation people, India, et al, leading to Bangladesh’s annihilation! Bangladesh has been bleeding profusely since 5 August 2024 ceaselessly.
