A pro-government private media entity in Colombo is reportedly preparing to launch a new political party following the conclusion of President Anura Kumara’s five-year term, according to reliable sources. The initiative is reportedly being developed with the aim of attracting voters who may drift away from the current administration ahead of Sri Lanka’s 2029 national elections.
According to reliable sources, preparations for the proposed political movement are being coordinated from the fourth floor of the media group’s headquarters on Braybrooke Place in Colombo 2. The same section of the building is reportedly being used to coordinate political communications supporting President Anura Kumara, including efforts to strengthen the President’s public image and counter opposition campaigns.
Sources further indicate that preliminary discussions on the formation of the new political party are taking place at the same location. Those involved are also reportedly exploring the acquisition of an already registered political party as part of the process of establishing the new political organisation.
The proposed party is expected to be formally launched after President Anura Kumara completes his current five-year term in office. According to reliable sources, the initiative is being coordinated by Shevan Devaratnam Daniel, who is described as being from a Tamil family in Jaffna.
The same sources also claim that individuals associated with the media entity played a role in the recent effort to bring together six Tamil and other minority political parties. Krishantha Cooray, described as a close adviser to President Anura Kumara, is also said to be providing external support to the initiative.
The principal objective of the proposed political party is to attract voters who may become disillusioned with President Anura Kumara while remaining within a broader political alignment supportive of the current administration. The party is reportedly expected to be unveiled closer to Sri Lanka’s next major national elections in 2029.
