European stock markets saw a positive opening on Thursday, buoyed by news that President Donald Trump had signaled the start of peace talks between the US and Russia aimed at ending the ongoing war in Ukraine. The Stoxx Europe 600 index rose 0.7%, and the euro strengthened by 0.4%, trading at $1.04 as investors reacted to the potential for a resolution to the nearly three-year-long conflict.

The war in Ukraine, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, has had far-reaching economic consequences, exacerbating global inflation and driving up commodity and energy prices. The uncertainty surrounding the war had also weighed heavily on western markets, contributing to concerns over supply chain disruptions and the risk of the conflict escalating. However, the announcement of peace talks sparked optimism that an end to the war could ease these pressures.

“A solution to the Ukraine war is for sure something that could take out some of the war premium to European equities,” said Charles De Boissezon, global head of equities at Société Générale. He noted that sentiment in Europe appeared to be improving in response to the potential for peace.

Major European indices performed strongly, with France’s Cac 40 climbing 1%, and Germany’s DAX rising 1.1%. However, London’s FTSE 100, which includes major oil companies like BP and Shell, saw a slight decline of 0.4%.

Crude oil prices also took a hit, with Brent crude, the global benchmark, falling by 0.8% to $74.55 per barrel. West Texas Intermediate (WTI), the US benchmark, dropped 0.9% to $70.73 per barrel. Natural gas prices followed suit, with the European benchmark TTF dropping 3.9% to €53.99 per megawatt-hour in Amsterdam.

The decline in energy prices, coupled with the potential reduction in geopolitical uncertainty, is expected to have a positive impact on European equities. “In a broader context, the impact of lower energy prices and the reduction in uncertainty will be positive for European equities,” said Daniel Morris, chief market strategist at BNP Paribas Asset Management.

In response to the developments, the Russian rouble appreciated 4.1% against the US dollar, rising to 90.12 roubles per dollar. Gold prices also saw a modest increase, rising 0.3% to $2,912 per troy ounce, nearing its all-time high.
