Experts Call for Caution in Pursuing Mirror Life Creation Amid Unprecedented Risks

In the latest issue of Science Magazine, experts have issued a warning regarding the potential creation of mirror life—organisms composed of mirror-image biomolecules that differ from the left- and right-handed molecules found in all known life. These mirror organisms, while currently a far-off goal, are becoming increasingly feasible due to rapid advancements in synthetic biology, but their creation could pose substantial, largely unanticipated risks to global health and ecosystems.

As researchers inch closer to the possibility of creating “mirror bacteria”—microorganisms built from mirror-image versions of DNA, RNA, proteins, and other essential components—concerns are growing over their potential to cause harm. Unlike natural organisms, which rely on “chiral” molecules, mirror bacteria would contain biomolecules that are the reverse of those in all known living beings. Such bacteria could evade immune systems, spread in the environment, and cause significant ecological damage, according to a comprehensive analysis conducted by a team of experts in synthetic biology, immunology, biosecurity, and other fields.

The report, a collaborative effort between scientists, policy-makers, and health professionals, warns that mirror bacteria could bypass the immune systems of humans, animals, and plants, leading to severe infections that could spread rapidly across ecosystems. The evasion of natural immune defenses arises from the inability of immune recognition processes, which are tightly tied to molecular chirality, to detect and neutralize these mirror molecules effectively. This means that mirror bacteria could proliferate inside hosts unchecked, potentially causing lethal infections. Additionally, because these bacteria might resist predation by natural enemies like phages and certain microbes, they could persist and spread widely in the environment.

While the creation of mirror bacteria is still a distant challenge requiring significant breakthroughs, the technological momentum in areas such as synthetic biology is accelerating, making such creations more plausible. Recent advances have enabled the synthesis of mirror-image nucleic acids and proteins, bringing mirror organisms a step closer to reality. However, the risks associated with their creation, particularly regarding their impact on human and animal health and their potential ecological invasions, have raised alarms.

In a joint statement, the researchers call for a global conversation about these risks and for governance measures to be put in place before progress in synthetic biology outpaces our ability to manage these potential dangers. The team emphasizes the importance of considering the broader implications of mirror life on public health, biodiversity, and biosecurity.

Notably, while the possibility of mirror organisms may sound speculative, their creation could open new avenues for scientific applications, such as creating long-lasting biomolecules with medical uses. However, the risks outweigh these benefits, according to the experts. “The potential for mirror bacteria to disrupt entire ecosystems and spread disease is too great to ignore,” said one of the lead researchers. “We cannot allow the pursuit of mirror life to proceed unchecked without a robust framework to manage the significant risks involved.”

The experts recommend that research aimed at creating mirror organisms be halted, at least until a better understanding of the risks is achieved. Additionally, they suggest that funding agencies and institutions should clarify that research into mirror bacteria will not be supported. To mitigate the risks, the report also suggests focusing on the development of biosurveillance systems and countermeasures, such as new antibiotics or engineered crops resistant to mirror bacteria, although the team notes that these measures would likely offer only partial protection.
