In a shocking and tragic incident in Sri Lanka’s Anuradhapura District, a father allegedly set fire to his family home during his daughter’s birthday celebration, killing four people and leaving several others critically injured. The tragedy occurred in the Pandikarameduwa area of Galenbindunuwewa, drawing national attention to the devastating consequences of domestic violence and unresolved family disputes.
According to police, the 43-year-old carpenter reportedly poured a flammable liquid into a room where his wife, two daughters, and mother-in-law were sleeping before igniting it around 2 a.m. on January 6. The fire claimed the lives of the suspect, his 13-year-old daughter, and his 36-year-old wife.
Three other family members, including the 20-year-old son, his 15-year-old daughter, and a relative, were hospitalized with serious burns. The son reportedly tried to rescue his mother and sisters, sustaining severe injuries in the process. Victims were initially treated at Huruluwewa District Hospital before being transferred to Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital for further care.
Police investigations suggest that ongoing domestic tensions, alcohol abuse, and prior assaults may have contributed to the violent act. The mother had previously moved out of the family home with her children after repeated incidents of abuse and had lodged complaints with local authorities. Sources indicate that the father’s anger over his family living separately may have motivated the attack.
Authorities, including the Judicial Medical Officer and a local magistrate, conducted on-site examinations. Further investigations are being led by the Galenbindunuwewa Police and the Horowpathana Assistant Superintendent of Police. Officials emphasize that the incident underscores the urgent need for effective mechanisms to manage domestic disputes and prevent family violence.
