HSBC UK has issued a warning to its employees that failure to meet in-office attendance requirements could lead to reduced bonuses, as the bank tightens its stance on remote working. The move, reported by the Financial Times, marks a significant shift in post-pandemic workplace expectations.

Staff at the bank’s UK retail division were informed this week that line managers will begin more closely tracking office attendance. A person familiar with the matter said that compliance with HSBC’s hybrid work policy—requiring employees to spend at least 60% of their time in the office or with clients—will now factor into annual performance reviews.

The directive applies to all employees with office-based contracts and comes amid a broader trend in the financial sector of dialing back on pandemic-era flexibility. Investment banks such as JPMorgan Chase and Barclays have recently increased pressure on staff to return to office routines. JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon has been especially vocal, criticizing remote work policies in a recent town hall.

Other UK financial institutions are following suit. Lloyds Banking Group implemented a similar bonus-linked attendance policy for senior executives earlier this year. Meanwhile, Citigroup has shuttered its Málaga office, once seen as a progressive step toward improving work-life balance for junior bankers.

HSBC UK, which employs around 23,000 staff across its branches and offices, introduced its three-day-a-week office requirement 18 months ago. According to sources cited by the Financial Times, line managers will now be equipped with enhanced data tools to monitor compliance more effectively.

Outside the banking sector, major professional services firms like PwC and EY have also ramped up monitoring of employee office attendance, with PwC last year announcing it would track in-office presence alongside billable hours for its 26,000 UK employees.

Although HSBC UK declined to comment officially, the internal memo linking bonuses to office attendance was first reported by Bloomberg.

  1. So HSBC recently implemented a policy to reduce work desks and committed to closing the canary wharf tower to cut costs. Moving to a smaller building in St Paul/ Bank area! So how can they expect to have 60% of staff in the office with 50% less work desks! It is just a policy to limit bonuses! On top of this they cut back on work issued phones and laptops expecting staff to use their own! Also working from
Home means often higher heating bills for the staff which again wasn’t adequately compensated for! HSBC also is on a vendetta against anyone not on the board with a good wage to make them redundant and bring in cheaper less experienced staff. . All who are currently clueless less and turning back one. Decision after another yet again! It’s like being on a banking roundabout!
