The mantis shrimp, known for delivering the fastest punch in the animal kingdom, has long puzzled scientists with its ability to unleash devastating blows without harming itself. Now, new research has uncovered how its club-like limb survives such extreme impacts, offering potential inspiration for the development of advanced materials.

According to a study published in Science on February 6, researchers have found that the mantis shrimp’s dactyl club is built with a multilayered structure designed to absorb high-frequency shockwaves. The club, which the crustacean uses to smash the shells of prey, contains a natural polymer called chitin combined with a calcium-rich mineral, forming an exoskeleton that withstands repeated high-impact strikes.

A key feature of this exoskeleton is the Bouligand structure, where chitin fibers are arranged in a unique, fan-like pattern that repeats every 500 micrometers. Scientists had previously theorized that this intricate design acts as a filter, dissipating the most dangerous shockwaves before they can damage the shrimp. Now, using a technique called pump-probe laser ultrasonics, the study confirms that the structure effectively traps and neutralizes harmful mechanical energy.

The findings, as reported by Nature, could have exciting applications in materials science. Study co-author Maroun Abi Ghanem, a physicist at the French National Centre for Scientific Research, suggests that mimicking this natural design could lead to the development of stronger, more resilient materials. Possible applications include surgical implants capable of harnessing energy from ultrasound waves or mechanical filters for electronic devices.

Nicola Pugno, a materials scientist at the University of Trento, Italy, praised the study, noting that nature’s evolutionary solutions often hold the key to technological innovations. The mantis shrimp’s punch, once merely a marvel of the natural world, is now providing engineers with a blueprint for creating impact-resistant materials with cutting-edge applications.
