In a recent session of the Supreme Council of the Cultural Revolution, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian highlighted the imperative of advancing artificial intelligence (AI) within the nation. He cautioned that any delay in AI development could result in “damaging and irreparable” consequences for Iran, especially given the fierce global competition in this arena.
President Pezeshkian emphasized the need for Iran to closely monitor international advancements in AI. He advocated for the formulation of policies and laws, the elimination of obstacles, and the fulfillment of necessary requirements to foster AI development. To this end, he directed the Vice President for Science, Technology, and Knowledge-Based Economy to engage with AI specialists across universities, research centers, and Parliament to conduct comprehensive studies on various dimensions of AI.
This initiative aligns with the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei’s earlier advisement for Iranian officials to commence building AI infrastructures. During a meeting with President Pezeshkian and cabinet members, Ayatollah Khamenei highlighted the utilization of AI in both military and non-military sectors and urged a deeper exploration into the multifaceted aspects of AI.
President Pezeshkian’s commitment to AI development is consistent with his broader agenda of promoting scientific advancement and openness in Iranian society. Since his election in July 2024, Pezeshkian has been viewed as a moderate leader intent on implementing progressive changes. His administration has increased the representation of women and individuals from diverse ethnic and religious backgrounds in government positions, fulfilling campaign promises to enhance inclusivity.
Furthermore, President Pezeshkian has emphasized the importance of reading and knowledge in bridging societal differences. At a national ceremony marking the National Day of Book, Reading, and Librarianship, he stated, “Reading and awareness lead us to a common language and perspective, and keep us away from conflict.” He underscored that a society embracing knowledge and science would not suffer from backwardness or poverty.
In the realm of foreign policy, Pezeshkian’s administration has signaled a willingness to re-engage with Western nations and pursue peaceful solutions to longstanding issues, such as Iran’s nuclear program. This approach reflects a pragmatic shift aimed at reviving the economy and improving international relations.
