Sri Lanka’s government has reportedly decided to appoint M.R.K. Lenagala, the country’s Ambassador to Austria, as the new Secretary to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, signaling a significant leadership reshuffle within the country’s diplomatic corps. According to sources, Lenagala has been recalled to Sri Lanka before the end of his term in Austria to assume the senior administrative role in Colombo.
The move comes as part of a broader diplomatic reorganization, with reports indicating that current Foreign Secretary Aruni Ranaraja is likely to be appointed as Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to France. The post has become vacant after the recall of Manisha Gunasekara, the current Sri Lankan Ambassador to France and one of the most senior officials in the Sri Lankan Foreign Service, who has also been called back to Colombo.
Lenagala’s appointment is being viewed as a strategic effort by the government to strengthen Sri Lanka’s relationship with the United Nations. Known for his expertise in dealing with the UN, he is expected to bring experience and continuity to Sri Lanka’s diplomatic engagement at the international level, particularly at a time when global partnerships and multilateral diplomacy are increasingly crucial for the country’s economic and political interests.
The Foreign Secretary is a pivotal role in Sri Lanka’s foreign policy apparatus, responsible for overseeing diplomatic missions, coordinating international negotiations, and advising the government on foreign policy matters. The anticipated shift in leadership is likely to influence the direction of Sri Lanka’s diplomatic strategy, particularly in Europe and at the United Nations.
