Speculation is mounting over the future leadership of Chechnya, as Ramzan Kadyrov, the region’s long-time strongman and close ally of President Vladimir Putin, reportedly considers handing power to his teenage son, Adam Kadyrov. The revelation, detailed in a recent report by The Times UK, has sparked anxiety within both the Kremlin and Chechnya’s ruling elite.

At just 17, Adam Kadyrov has already acquired a reputation for aggression and ostentation—mirroring that of his father—with a taste for military uniforms, high-powered vehicles and public displays of force. He gained notoriety last year when footage emerged of him beating a prisoner, a move widely condemned but seen by some as a signal of his political coming-of-age.

In recent months, Adam has been awarded a growing list of titles, including Secretary of the Security Council of Chechnya, fuelling speculation that he is being groomed to continue the dynastic rule established by his grandfather, Akhmad Kadyrov, who served as president before his assassination in 2004.

Ramzan Kadyrov, now 48, has frequently hinted at retirement, often seen as strategic posturing to elicit support. However, The Times UK cites several sources suggesting that this time may be different. Reports of serious health concerns—including acute pancreatic necrosis and kidney failure—have intensified speculation that a real succession plan is in motion.

During a recent visit to Moscow, Kadyrov reportedly floated the idea of Adam assuming leadership, though Russian media, including Al Jazeera, claimed the proposal was met with resistance from President Putin.

“The Kremlin doesn’t want Adam,” said Emil Aslan, a North Caucasus expert and professor at Charles University in Prague. “They don’t mind if Chechnya stays under the Kadyrov clan, but their priority is stability—and Adam is not capable.”

While Ramzan has attempted to counter claims of poor health by sharing videos of himself lifting weights and sparring in the gym, social media users have noted the suspiciously light dumbbells used—7kg and 14kg—further fuelling scepticism.

Observers believe the most likely scenario would involve a regency, with a more experienced figure taking control until Adam reaches the minimum constitutional age of 30 to serve as president. When Kadyrov himself assumed power in 2007, he had to wait until he turned 30, with interim leadership installed after his father’s assassination.

Possible caretakers include Adam Delimkhanov, 55, a close ally and relative of Kadyrov, who has been linked to state repression and high-profile assassinations, including that of opposition leader Boris Nemtsov. Another contender is Apti Alaudinov, 51, commander of the “Akhmat” special forces unit currently serving in Ukraine, known for his oratory skills and disciplined demeanour—unlike many in Kadyrov’s inner circle.

A recent report from the Begin-Sadat Centre for Strategic Studies suggested that a collective leadership model could emerge in the event of Kadyrov’s exit, with Moscow acting as the ultimate arbiter. But the same report cast doubt on the sustainability of such an arrangement, given the personal ambitions and violent track records of many of the likely contenders.

For now, the fate of Chechnya hangs in the balance, as does the Kremlin’s grip on one of Russia’s most volatile republics. Whether Adam Kadyrov is destined to become the next leader or merely a pawn in a complex power transition remains to be seen. But as The Times UK notes, the stakes for both Moscow and Grozny could not be higher.
