Older adults in England are enjoying unprecedented levels of physical and mental health, with many 70-year-olds today experiencing the vitality of someone a decade younger, according to a study published in Nature Aging.
Researchers analyzed data from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing, finding that generational improvements in education, nutrition, and medical advancements—such as joint replacements and hypertension treatments—have significantly enhanced health expectancy.
“A 68-year-old born in 1950 has the same capacity as a 62-year-old born a decade earlier,” said John Beard, professor of ageing at Columbia University. Similar findings were observed in China, highlighting a global trend of healthier aging.
However, Beard warned that rising obesity rates and unequal access to resources could threaten these gains. Nonetheless, the study offers a hopeful message, with evidence suggesting that life expectancy is increasingly accompanied by better health in later years.
