Indian National Security Adviser, Ajit Kumar Doval KC PPMPM, during his recent visit to Sri Lanka, held discussions with representatives from key Muslim political parties. The Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) was represented by its Secretary President, Advocate Nisam Kariyappar, while Rishad Bathiudeen and Amir Ali participated on behalf of the All Ceylon Makkal Congress (ACMC).

Both parties, which have formally declared their support for Sajith Premadasa’s presidential candidacy, emphasized that approximately 90% of Sri Lanka’s Muslim population, particularly in the Northern and Eastern provinces, is expected to vote for Premadasa in the upcoming elections. They highlighted the strong turnout and enthusiasm at campaign events, further solidifying their confidence in Premadasa’s prospects.

The Muslim leaders assured Doval that, in a Premadasa-led government, their parties would play a crucial role in shaping foreign policy. They pledged that Sri Lanka’s relations with India would remain aligned with India’s strategic interests under the new administration.

Additionally, they called for India’s continued support, particularly in addressing minority rights, economic issues, and other challenges facing the Muslim community in Sri Lanka. They urged India to actively engage in resolving these matters in partnership with a future Premadasa government.

In response, Doval conveyed India’s positive stance towards the issues raised and reaffirmed India’s commitment to fostering strong bilateral relations with Sri Lanka.
