China has reportedly developed a prototype nuclear reactor intended for use on a future aircraft carrier, signalling notable advancements in nuclear propulsion technology for large warships. This development, covered by the Associated Press and based on an analysis from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies, was confirmed through satellite images and government documents. The reactor is located at Base 909 in Sichuan, a facility managed by the China Nuclear Energy Institute.
Nuclear-powered aircraft carriers are expected to significantly bolster the capabilities of China’s navy, already the largest in the world. Nuclear propulsion would extend the carriers’ cruising range and free up space on board for additional fuel and weaponry, enhancing both operational reach and firepower.
Meanwhile, Chinese authorities have commented on military cooperation between Russia and North Korea, affirming that they do not interfere in these matters. Lin Jian, an official representative of China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that such cooperation falls within the purview of Moscow and Pyongyang and is considered their own internal affair.
