High above Earth, some 22,000 miles into space, an unacknowledged encounter in 2022 revealed how rapidly outer space is being transformed into a new arena of military competition. An American patrol satellite known as USA 270 maneuvered toward two newly launched Chinese spacecraft near geostationary orbit, approaching from behind with the sun at its back to gain a visual advantage. What followed resembled an aerial dogfight more than a routine satellite pass, as one of the Chinese satellites slowed abruptly, allowing the American craft to overshoot before reversing positions and forcing U.S. operators on the ground to rethink their strategy.
The episode was never publicly confirmed by either the Pentagon or Beijing, but defense officials and analysts say such encounters are no longer rare. According to reporting by The Washington Post, close-proximity maneuvering between rival satellites has become common enough that U.S. Space Force officials now openly refer to it as “dogfighting in space.” These orbital skirmishes, unfolding far from public view, mark a significant shift away from the long-standing norm in which satellites followed largely fixed paths to conserve fuel and avoid risk.
At the heart of this new behavior is the growing strategic importance of satellites to modern warfare. Space-based systems provide missile warning, intelligence collection, secure communications and navigation, making them indispensable to military supremacy. As a result, the United States, China and Russia are investing heavily in spacecraft designed to maneuver aggressively, gathering intelligence on adversaries’ satellites while positioning themselves for advantage in a potential conflict.
Much of the activity involves spying rather than outright attacks. Satellites fly close enough to photograph rivals, intercept signals or test jamming capabilities. Even so, proximity itself carries risk. Satellites travel at speeds approaching 17,500 miles per hour, and an approach within even 10 miles is considered dangerously close. Unlike fighter jets, these engagements can stretch across hours or days, with subtle changes in speed and altitude determining who gains the upper hand.
The February 2022 encounter between USA 270 and the Chinese Shiyan 12-01 and 12-02 satellites highlighted how sophisticated this maneuvering has become. As the American satellite closed in, the Chinese pair split up, one slipping behind USA 270 with the sun at its back, a tactic designed to blind sensors and cameras. Over the following days, both sides adjusted speed and position in a slow-motion contest for advantage before the American satellite eventually pulled away.
Senior U.S. officials acknowledge that China’s actions reflect a broader effort to challenge American dominance in space. Gen. Stephen Whiting, commander of U.S. Space Command, told The Washington Post that Chinese satellites are being maneuvered in ways that could confer a decisive edge in a conflict. He said the United States is responding by developing its own advanced maneuvering capabilities while trying to operate in a professional manner that avoids collisions or miscalculation.
China, for its part, denies militarizing space. Liu Pengyu, a spokesman for the Chinese Embassy in Washington, said Beijing is committed to the peaceful use of outer space and opposes an arms race there. Yet China’s rapidly expanding space program tells a more complex story. The country now operates six spaceports, has launched more than 80 rockets this year alone, and controls more than 1,000 satellites, many with military applications. Unlike the United States, which separates civilian and military space activities, China’s program is run entirely by its armed forces, allowing seamless transfer of technology from civilian research to defense use.
Geostationary orbit, where the 2022 encounter occurred, has become a focal point of concern. Positioned so satellites remain fixed over a single point on Earth, the orbit hosts some of the most sensitive U.S. military and intelligence assets. Recognizing its importance, the Pentagon in 2014 created what officials informally described as a “neighborhood watch,” deploying satellites like USA 270 to monitor foreign spacecraft operating nearby.
The rivalry extends beyond maneuvering alone. Pentagon officials have been closely watching Chinese satellites capable of grappling and moving other spacecraft. In one widely noted case, a Chinese satellite used a robotic arm to capture a defunct satellite and tow it to a graveyard orbit. While China described the mission as space debris cleanup, U.S. officials saw a demonstration of a capability that could theoretically be used to disable American GPS or missile-warning satellites.
Russia has also added to U.S. concerns, flying satellites close to Western spacecraft and deploying systems that release smaller objects in orbit, behavior analysts say has no civilian justification. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius recently warned that satellites can be jammed, blinded or kinetically disrupted, lamenting that space has become a critical vulnerability for modern militaries.
For now, most space confrontations remain limited to observation, jamming tests and positional maneuvering. But Pentagon officials warn that advances in autonomy and artificial intelligence could soon allow dozens or even hundreds of satellites to operate together in coordinated “swarms,” dramatically escalating the stakes.
