China Eyes Lunar Supremacy: Could It Beat the U.S. Back to the Moon?

As NASA readies astronauts for Artemis II, China is quietly preparing a historic crewed lunar landing, aiming for a permanent foothold by 2030.

All eyes were on the sky yesterday as NASA launched four astronauts on its Artemis II mission, a lunar flyby designed to test the agency’s hardware and procedures for returning humans to the Moon in 2028. Yet amid the fanfare of America’s space ambitions, another global contender is moving with equal determination: China plans to send its first crew to the lunar surface within the next decade. While NASA focuses on timing, China is emphasizing both technology and long-term presence, signaling a potential reshaping of lunar geopolitics.

China’s lunar ambitions center on the Mengzhou spacecraft, or “dream vessel,” designed to ferry several astronauts beyond low Earth orbit. The vehicle will launch atop a Long March 10 rocket, while a separate rocket will carry a lunar lander named Lanyue, or “embracing the Moon.” The lander is expected to rendezvous with Mengzhou in lunar orbit before descending to the surface. Mengzhou, similar in size to NASA’s Orion capsule, can carry up to seven astronauts to low Earth orbit, though a trip to the Moon will take roughly three days.

In February, the China Manned Spaceflight Agency (CMSA) conducted a critical uncrewed test flight of Mengzhou, evaluating its abort system and detachment procedures. Later this year, another uncrewed mission will see the spacecraft dock with China’s orbiting Tiangong space station. “It looks like it’s almost ready to go,” said Quentin Parker, director of the Laboratory for Space Research at the University of Hong Kong. More tests are expected before the 2030 crewed lunar landing, although details of these missions remain closely guarded.

NASA’s own lunar schedule has faced delays. Initially planning to return astronauts to the Moon in 2024, the agency’s timeline slipped due to unfinished hardware, including the lunar lander—either SpaceX’s Starship or Blue Origin’s Blue Moon—which remain in development. With the earliest human landing now projected for 2028, the path is open for China to potentially beat the United States to the lunar surface, an outcome Parker says is increasingly plausible. “There is a possibility that China will get to the Moon first,” he noted.

China’s methodical approach is underpinned by years of robotic lunar exploration. Since 2007, Beijing has executed a series of missions, including the 2019 landing on the Moon’s far side, the return of lunar samples in 2020, and the first samples from the far side in 2024. These milestones have laid a foundation of technical expertise and confidence ahead of a crewed mission.

For its inaugural Moon landing, China is considering 14 potential sites, with the equatorial Rimae Bode region emerging as a leading candidate. Located slightly north of the Moon’s equator, Rimae Bode features ancient volcanic formations and debris from giant impacts. “Landing at Rimae Bode would be like opening a high-definition history book of the Moon’s life,” said Jun Huang, a planetary scientist at the China University of Geosciences in Wuhan. He highlighted the site’s potential to reveal both lunar mantle material and insights into Earth-Moon evolution.

Beyond this first landing, China and the United States share a common interest in the Moon’s south pole, where deposits of water ice could provide fuel for extended missions. China envisions a permanent lunar base in collaboration with Russia—the International Lunar Research Station (ILRS)—during the 2030s, focused on geology, astronomy, and other scientific objectives. NASA also announced plans for a Moon base last month, though analysts caution that political competition alone may not sustain a decades-long commitment.

The dynamic between Washington and Beijing frames a unique, one-sided lunar race. NASA has publicly acknowledged China as a “credible competitor,” with Administrator Jared Isaacman urging the agency to accelerate progress to meet its goals. Yet experts note that China is not primarily motivated by beating the United States. “They identify the Moon as strategic high ground,” said Namrata Goswami, a space-security researcher at Johns Hopkins University. China’s latest five-year plan explicitly prioritizes deep-space exploration, framing the effort as a long-term, independent strategy rather than a contest.

Parker agrees that China’s lunar ambitions combine national pride with genuine scientific objectives. “They reject the moniker of a space race,” he said, “because they think it’s framing everything in a cold war mentality.” Clive Neal, a planetary geologist at the University of Notre Dame, echoed this assessment: “China doesn’t need to compete. China will do what China wants. They’re just doing their own thing.”

As NASA’s Artemis missions progress and China finalizes its plans for Mengzhou and Lanyue, the next decade could see a profound shift in humanity’s presence on the Moon. While the United States emphasizes speed and symbolic milestones, China is methodically building the infrastructure and experience for sustained exploration, aiming not just for footprints but for a lasting foothold. Whether this strategy will lead Beijing to be the first to touch the Moon’s surface since Apollo 17 in 1972 remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: the Moon is no longer a sole stage for American dreams.
