In a historic election this weekend, Anura Kumara Dissanayake, known as AKD, has become the first president of Sri Lanka from outside the traditional political elite since independence. The left-wing candidate, hailing from humble beginnings in Anuradhapura, has garnered support amid the country’s ongoing economic crisis.

Erik Solheim, former Norwegian Minister and climate change advisor to Sri Lanka, commented on the significance of this election, stating, “The result is a testimony to the pain underprivileged Sri Lankans have felt during the economic crisis. There is widespread sympathy for AKD’s fight against corruption and his call for more welfare for the people.”

However, Solheim cautioned, “The weakness of the election winner is that his coalition has very little experience running a complicated state like Sri Lanka. They may struggle to achieve a majority in parliament and implement their many promises in a challenging economic environment.”

Solheim emphasized the importance of international support for Dissanayake’s administration, saying, “AKD deserves help on that journey. A more prosperous, peaceful, and greener Sri Lanka is in everyone’s interest.”

This election also marked a shift away from the ethnic extremism that has characterized past campaigns. “Many western nations can learn from the peacefulness of the election,” Solheim noted, highlighting the graceful acknowledgment of Dissanayake’s victory by losing candidates Sajith Premadasa and Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Wickremesinghe, who played a crucial role in restoring stability during the economic meltdown, will be remembered as a leader who successfully navigated challenging waters. Solheim remarked, “Hardly any leader in world history has been reelected on the basis of implementing an IMF program. We will see more to Ranil.”
