President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has taken a strong stance on the ongoing controversy surrounding Speaker of Parliament Dr. Asoka Sapumal Ranwala’s educational qualifications. The issue, which has caused significant political ripples, arose after allegations questioned the legitimacy of Ranwala’s PhD. Public records, including Wikipedia and the Parliament’s official website, recently removed references to the Speaker’s honorific title.
Following Monday’s weekly cabinet meeting, President Dissanayake summoned Speaker Ranwala for a direct explanation on the matter. In a reportedly stern exchange, the President is said to have told Ranwala, “Asoka, it is time for you to clear yourself. You know this will cause us irreversible damage.” A reliable source revealed that Ranwala assured the President he would present evidence to refute the allegations and restore confidence in his credentials.
Political Fallout and Public Reaction
Speaker Ranwala’s earlier dismissal of the accusations as “not necessary” to address has exacerbated public outcry. The government, which came to power on a platform promising transparency and meritocracy, now faces sharp criticism from its own supporters.
“The integrity of the government is at stake,” remarked a senior member of the National People’s Power (NPP) alliance. “This situation is deeply concerning for a party like the JVP, which has always prided itself on clean and principled politics.”
Cabinet Media Spokesperson Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa addressed the issue during yesterday’s Cabinet briefing, confirming that Speaker Ranwala is preparing a formal statement. “The Speaker will provide a clear explanation regarding the allegations. Once he delivers his report, the government will decide on the appropriate course of action,” Dr. Jayatissa said.
President’s Diplomatic Visit to India
This domestic controversy coincides with President Dissanayake’s first official visit to India, scheduled for this Sunday. The visit, seen as a pivotal moment in Sri Lanka-India relations, will focus on strengthening bilateral ties in trade, security, and regional cooperation.
President Dissanayake is slated to meet India’s External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval in New Delhi, ahead of high-level discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The agenda includes exploring enhanced economic collaboration, maritime security in the Indian Ocean region, and cooperation in renewable energy projects.
The visit is strategically significant, coming at a time when Sri Lanka seeks to strengthen its economic recovery with regional partnerships. President Dissanayake’s engagements aim to rebuild investor confidence and solidify Sri Lanka’s role as a critical partner in South Asia.
