Editor’s Note: The following article is based on excerpts from an interview with FBI Director Kash Patel, who discusses the importance of restoring trust in the agency under the Trump administration, as well as his priorities moving forward. The interview, conducted by Trey Gowdy on Sunday Night in America, highlights Patel’s vision for the future of the FBI, the challenges he faces, and his approach to leading the bureau.

In his first month as FBI Director, Kash Patel has set out to restore the agency’s reputation and rebuild public trust, both of which had been severely damaged in the years leading up to his appointment. The task ahead of him is no small feat, as the FBI had long been embroiled in controversies that included politicised investigations, biased leadership, and questionable decision-making. Patel’s tenure began with a clear mandate: to bring the FBI back to its original mission of safeguarding American citizens, free from political interference.

When discussing his vision for the future of the FBI, Patel acknowledged the significant decline in public trust in the agency. “It was bank robbers, kidnappers, gangs, and terrorism. It was all about crime,” Patel remarked, adding that the perception of the FBI began to deteriorate as trust in the agency crumbled. He pointed out that former FBI Director James Comey had insisted that the agency was impartial, claiming it didn’t care about politics, but “his actions told a very different story.” Patel pointed to the fact that at one point, the FBI had both major presidential candidates under investigation, which ultimately eroded the agency’s credibility.

Patel’s first month on the job has been marked by an unwavering focus on restoring fairness, transparency, and accountability at the FBI. “We have to remind the American public that the FBI reports to the Department of Justice, and the FBI does not make prosecutorial decisions,” he explained. The FBI, according to Patel, investigates based on lawful predicates and works with the DOJ to ensure that investigations are conducted appropriately, without bias or political motivation.

One of Patel’s major goals is to address what he sees as a problem with the concentration of FBI agents in Washington, D.C. “There’s 38,000 employees at the FBI. If you take the national capital region, we have 11,000 employees in that 50-mile radius around Washington, D.C.,” Patel said. He emphasised that a third of the country’s crime occurs outside of this area, so he has made it a priority to reassign agents to work on the ground in communities across the United States. By focusing resources on violent crime, narco-trafficking, and the growing fentanyl crisis, Patel aims to make a real difference in the daily lives of American citizens.

Patel’s decision to redirect the agency’s focus comes at a time when the threat landscape in the United States has shifted significantly. While national security remains a priority for the FBI, Patel has made it clear that tackling violent crime will be a central focus during his tenure. “Every seven minutes in this country, an individual American citizen overdoses on a drug,” Patel noted, further adding that “every six and a half minutes, a woman or child is raped.” He also underscored the growing issue of gang violence, homicides, and the intersection between illegal immigration and violent crime. In his view, the explosion in violent crime has reached the level of a national security crisis, and it must be addressed with the same urgency.

As Patel continues to push forward with his efforts to reform the FBI, one of the core challenges he faces is maintaining a sense of fairness, even when confronted with critics who have been far from fair to him. “I don’t care what the media says about me. There’s nothing they can tell me that I haven’t heard,” Patel said, reflecting on the constant personal attacks he’s faced since his nomination. Despite this, he remains focused on his mission to serve the American people and ensure that the FBI functions as an impartial institution, rooted in truth and justice.

Patel’s unwavering commitment to fairness, transparency, and truth comes from his deep belief in the importance of accountability. “The priority here is the truth and serving the American people,” he said, emphasising that the FBI must not only investigate criminals but also hold itself accountable for any past mistakes. This ethos of accountability extends to congressional oversight, which Patel views as a vital component of the FBI’s relationship with the American public. As he pointed out, “Constitutional congressional oversight is critical,” and he has made a promise to provide transparency to Capitol Hill, making sure that the FBI’s actions are fully scrutinised.

While many view the FBI’s use of certain legal tools, such as the 1,001 cases—cases involving false statements to federal agents—as controversial, Patel expressed his commitment to ensuring that these tools are used fairly and only when appropriate. Drawing from his extensive experience as both a criminal defence attorney and a federal prosecutor, Patel argued that the previous leadership of the FBI had misused statutes like the 1,001 charge to politicise the law. “They weaponised law statutes like the 1,001 count to victimise and politicise the statutes on the books instead of using them against actual criminals,” he said. Under Patel’s leadership, however, he pledged that the FBI would only use such charges where the facts and the law allow it, and not as a tool for political retribution.

Patel’s approach to leadership has already been demonstrated in his first month in office. In a display of strong leadership, the FBI has made significant progress in combating violent crime and bringing perpetrators to justice. Patel highlighted the arrest of three individuals from the FBI’s Top 10 Most Wanted list in just three weeks, a remarkable achievement that stands in stark contrast to the previous year, during which the FBI made no such arrests. Additionally, Patel was proud of the agency’s successful efforts in bringing one of the architects of the Abbeygate explosion to justice in just one week, a testament to the FBI’s renewed focus and efficiency under his leadership.

Reflecting on the broader role of the FBI, Patel emphasised the importance of trust and cooperation between law enforcement and the American public. “95% of the FBI agents you would love to have as your next-door neighbour,” he said, stressing that the actions of a few bad apples should not define the entire agency. He pointed out that while the FBI has had problems in the past, it is working diligently to hold itself accountable and ensure that those responsible for any misconduct are removed from the ranks. “There is no corner on this earth we will not chase down a violent criminal,” Patel assured, vowing that the FBI would continue to root out corruption and make the American people aware of any wrongdoing.

Patel’s extensive background in government service, which includes roles as a public defender, prosecutor, and national security expert, has uniquely positioned him to lead the FBI. His experience across all three branches of the federal government, combined with his firsthand understanding of law enforcement, has shaped his approach to running the bureau. As Patel himself put it, “I want to make sure we serve the American people and make sure their kids have safe schoolyards, safe playgrounds, and safe streets.”

Despite the challenges, Patel’s optimism and determination remain unwavering. He is committed to transforming the FBI into an agency that not only restores public trust but is truly worthy of that trust. Under his leadership, the FBI will continue to confront the evolving threat landscape, from violent crime to national security, and hold itself to the highest standards of accountability and transparency. Through these efforts, Kash Patel hopes to leave a lasting legacy of an FBI that serves the American people with integrity, fairness, and unwavering dedication to justice.

Patel’s story is still unfolding, but in just one month, he has made it clear that his approach to leadership is driven by a commitment to the truth, to justice, and to the American people. His tenure may be in its early stages, but already, there are signs that the FBI is on the path to recovery. As Patel continues to lead the agency, his efforts to restore trust, tackle violent crime, and promote transparency will shape the future of the FBI for years to come.
