German Chancellor Friedrich Merz departed for India on Sunday in a high-profile visit aimed at strengthening economic and security partnerships between Europe’s largest economy and the world’s most populous democracy.

Merz’s trip, his first to Asia since taking office last May, comes just two weeks ahead of a planned EU-India summit and as the two sides negotiate a landmark free-trade agreement. “This agreement is envisioned not just as a trade deal, but as a comprehensive partnership that addresses modern economic realities,” India’s commerce ministry said. During his two-day visit, Merz will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Ahmedabad before traveling to Bengaluru, where the leaders are set to attend a traditional kite festival and visit the Sabarmati Ashram, the historic retreat of Mahatma Gandhi.

The visit highlights India’s growing strategic importance for Germany, especially amid a turbulent global order dominated by the United States and China. A German government spokesman noted that choosing India for his first Asian trip underscores the country’s role as a key partner. Beyond trade, security cooperation is expected to be a focal point, with discussions underway on a potential deal for Germany’s Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems to build six submarines for the Indian Navy in partnership with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders. While the contract is not expected to be signed during the visit, it is likely to advance technology transfer and help modernize India’s ageing fleet.

Merz will be accompanied by a large business delegation, including executives from Siemens and Airbus, reflecting Germany’s push to deepen economic ties with India. Bilateral trade currently totals almost €50 billion, with German firms seeking growth amid slumping sales in China and rising global competition. Analysts note that India represents a critical market for German exports, including green energy technology, defence equipment, and skilled labour. The two governments are also expected to discuss easing mobility rules for workers and students, supporting Germany’s chronic labour shortages and expanding research cooperation.

Economic experts see the timing of Merz’s visit as ideal. India is navigating high US tariffs and recalibrating its engagement with China, creating opportunities for closer ties with Germany and the EU. “This is certainly a time when India is striving to expand trade relations, such as with Germany or with Europe as a whole,” said economist Samina Sultan of the German Economic Institute. The visit underscores the growing convergence of economic, security, and educational interests between Germany and India at a pivotal moment in global geopolitics.
