The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has added the distorted and politicized version of Operation Sindoor, in which Pakistan has been held responsible for the Pahalgam attack. It is generally a common practice in which the authority manipulates events and propagates the altered information for certain political gains.
The NCERT added Operation Sindoor module for grades 9 to 12 students, and alleges that the civil-military leadership of Pakistan is responsible for the Pahalgam attack. The decision is reminiscent of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) doctrine, which aimed to instill extreme and nationalist narratives in young minds. Such policies could intensify regional tension and exacerbate the enduring animosity between India and Pakistan.
Despite strained relations with India, Pakistan offered full support in the investigation of the terrorist attack and called for a detailed inquiry from neutral international investigators. Pakistan itself is the victim of terrorism and has paid a heavy cost of sacrificing 80000 lives.
The narrative surrounding Operation Sindoori indicates a troubling trend and reveals the BJP’s manipulation tactics in India’s educational and political landscape. However, it will have far-reaching consequences, and it is not inappropriate to assert that these trends and growing animosity will alter the geopolitical realities and balance in South Asia.
The international observers and independent researchers have negated India’s claim of Pakistan’s direct involvement in the Pahalgam incident. Moreover, it is hard to believe how perpetrators succeeded in launching an attack despite having 9.5 lakh troops in Kashmir, who are on duty to guard the valley.
However, the NCERT’s attempt to include the Sindoor module in the syllabus is a deliberate attempt to rewrite history. It serves as a politically designed move to project an inflated image of victory and strategic dominance, while negating objective facts.
The high officials, opposition leaders of India, and even the international media have constantly debunked the exaggerated claims of the Indian media regarding the success of Operation Sindoor. The Indian air force officer endorsed Pakistan’s claim that the six Indian fighter jets had been shot down in the counter-offensive attack. However, their media have exaggerated the claims, which was the sheer propagation of false information.
Despite international endorsement, the Modi government has taken the defeat of Operation Sindoor on its nerves. To promote a nationalist agenda and misinformation, the BJP government is now persistently using educational institutions, and this tactic will create a “society of lies,” which is a dilemma of the post-truth era. The manipulation and distortion in history will cultivate hostility rather than understanding between India and Pakistan.
Education unlocks individual potential and their ability to think in the prospect of multiple paradigms. It encourages question-asking and critical thinking skills, which are essential for decoding the binaries of any narrative. It would not be inappropriate to argue that such policies will undermine India’s educational quality, as they are not in adherence with global standards.
Distorting the events, facts, and binaries will hurt India’s image on the global stage. A one-sided version of any event could fuel nationalist sentiments and corrupt young minds.
For progress, the propagation of values, culture, tradition, and identity is important for the sustainability of their enduring development. To grow as a global power, India must demonstrate adherence to these soft core values. The state is a responsible actor in embracing all of its legacy and the truth. Altering the facts could deepen the rift rather than offering a vital solution. The NCERT Operation Sindoor module revealed the potential agenda to defame Pakistan and portray its worst image to India’s Youth. Nevertheless, propaganda and distortion cannot be sustained for long. At last, truth wins and propaganda unfolds.
