French President Emmanuel Macron has warned that the return of Donald Trump to the White House should serve as an “electroshock” for Europe, compelling the continent to take control of its future. Speaking with the Financial Times, Macron expressed concern over the US’s shifting focus from Europe to Asia and highlighted the urgency for Europe to strengthen its defense and economic autonomy.

Macron’s comments came in the context of Trump’s ongoing talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding peace talks with Ukraine. While many European leaders were furious over these developments, Macron has positioned himself more pragmatically, acknowledging that Trump’s return has disrupted the status quo, creating both an opportunity and a challenge for Europe.

“The only question at this stage is whether President Putin is genuinely, sustainably, and credibly willing to agree to a ceasefire on this basis. After that, it’s up to the Ukrainians to negotiate with Russia,” Macron said. He emphasized that Europe must no longer rely on the US for its security, noting that only by boosting its own defense capabilities could Europe ensure its sovereignty. Macron also criticized the EU’s current fiscal framework, calling it “obsolete” and urging the bloc to break free from restrictive regulations to better invest in its future.

With Trump’s “America First” rhetoric likely to return, Macron stressed the importance of Europe “muscling up” economically and militarily, calling for a radical rethink of its defense posture. In particular, he pointed to the need for greater military integration across EU states and less reliance on US weaponry, such as advocating for the purchase of the Franco-Italian SAMP-T air defense system rather than the US-made Patriot system.

As Europe faces its moment of reckoning, Macron has called for bold reforms that go beyond mere defense spending. He warned that without economic integration and strategic unity, the EU risks falling behind in the global race for emerging technologies and economic influence. With the EU’s defense industry still fragmented, Macron advocates for more cross-border cooperation, which is essential to strengthening the region’s military capabilities.

While challenges remain, including political resistance and a divided EU, Macron remains optimistic that Europe can navigate these troubled waters and build a stronger, more independent future. As he put it, “It is Europe’s moment to accelerate and execute, and it has no choice.”
