Elon Musk’s company Neuralink will begin “high-volume production” of its brain-computer interface (BCI) devices and transition to fully automated surgical implantation in 2026, Musk announced Wednesday on the social media platform X. The move marks a significant step toward making the technology more widely available to patients with severe neurological conditions.
The implants are designed to help people with spinal cord injuries and other debilitating conditions. Early recipients of the device have reportedly used it to play video games, browse the internet, post on social media, and move cursors on a computer simply through thought.
Neuralink began human trials in 2024 after overcoming safety concerns initially raised by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which had rejected the company’s application in 2022. As of September 2025, the company said 12 people worldwide with severe paralysis had received implants and were using them to control both digital and physical tools through thought alone.
The company also secured $650 million in a June funding round to support expansion. Neuralink did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters regarding the 2026 production plans.
Musk’s announcement signals a new phase for brain-computer interface technology, combining scaled manufacturing with automated procedures that could reduce risks and increase accessibility for patients worldwide.
