The Stortinget is set to hold a parliamentary debate today (26) examining the political and human rights situation in Sri Lanka, one year after the country’s last national elections. According to foreign media reports, the session aims to evaluate the trajectory of governance, democratic reforms, and accountability under the current administration, reflecting growing international attention on Sri Lanka’s domestic developments.

The debate was initiated by Norwegian Labour Party Member of Parliament Kamzy Gunaratnam and will include remarks from Norway’s Minister of Foreign Affairs. Key topics on the agenda include governance, anti-corruption commitments, the human rights situation, conditions affecting ethnic and religious minorities, and concerns over militarisation, accountability, and post-conflict reconciliation.

Gunaratnam highlighted the significance of global engagement, stating that Sri Lanka has faced profound political, economic, and social challenges in recent years. She described the debate as a forum to foster informed international dialogue rooted in democratic principles, human rights, and long-term stability.

The session will utilize Norway’s interpellation process, a formal parliamentary mechanism allowing detailed questioning of government policy on issues of national and international importance. Lawmakers are expected to scrutinize Norway’s diplomatic and policy approach to Sri Lanka while considering avenues for continued engagement, signaling heightened European interest in the island nation’s governance and human rights record.
