Former US President Barack Obama has said he believes aliens are “real,” while firmly rejecting long-running conspiracy theories that the United States is hiding extraterrestrial evidence at the highly secretive Area 51 military installation.
Speaking on the No Lie with Brian Tyler Cohen hosted by Brian Tyler Cohen, Obama responded affirmatively when asked whether extraterrestrial life exists, but clarified that he has never seen aliens and has no knowledge of them being held by the US government. He added that there is no hidden underground facility storing alien specimens, joking that such a massive secret would have had to be concealed even from the president.
Area 51, located at Groom Lake in the US state of Nevada, has long been at the center of speculation about UFOs and extraterrestrial research. The site’s existence was officially acknowledged in 2013 by the Central Intelligence Agency after decades of secrecy, with declassified documents revealing it had been used since 1955 to test experimental aircraft and reconnaissance technology.
The extreme confidentiality surrounding the base helped fuel theories that crashed alien spacecraft were stored there or that the facility hosted contact with beings from other worlds. Officials have repeatedly attributed unusual sightings in the region to classified flight tests rather than extraterrestrial activity.
US defense authorities have also sought to tamp down speculation. The Pentagon told lawmakers in recent years that hundreds of reports of unidentified aerial phenomena had been logged by military personnel, but stressed in 2024 that there is no evidence indicating extraterrestrial life has visited Earth.
Meanwhile, current US President Donald Trump has expressed skepticism about alien life, saying he is not a believer, though he acknowledged meeting credible individuals who reported seeing unexplained objects in the sky.
Obama’s remarks, blending humor with curiosity, have reignited global fascination with UFOs and the possibility of life beyond Earth, even as officials maintain that no verified proof of extraterrestrial contact exists.
