Palantir’s Maven Smart System (MSS), the AI-driven tool currently guiding US and Israeli strikes in Iran, has been elevated to a permanent role within the Pentagon, Reuters reports. A letter from Deputy Secretary of Defense Steve Feinberg confirmed that Maven is now an “official program of record,” guaranteeing long-term funding and full military integration. The decision signals a strategic commitment by the United States to embed algorithmic targeting at the core of its warfighting operations.
Maven’s technology, which processes satellite imagery, surveillance feeds, and flight path data, has been used to support real-time target selection in ongoing operations. Pentagon officials describe the AI system as designed to “detect, deter, and dominate” adversaries across all domains. Oversight of the program will move to the Pentagon’s Chief Digital Artificial Intelligence Office, with future billion-dollar contracts slated for the Army, cementing Palantir’s role in the US military-industrial complex.
The promotion comes after Palantir secured a $10 billion-plus deal with the US Army last summer and numerous other government contracts. The company’s stock has surged amid geopolitical conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, pushing its market capitalization toward $360 billion. Analysts note that with Maven now officially integrated, Palantir stands at the forefront of AI-enabled military technology, raising profound questions about the future of automated targeting and the risks of expanding algorithmic warfare, particularly in Iran.
