Tensions erupted at Wellawatta Beach on Monday ( yesyerday) during an event organized by Colombo-based NGO activists to commemorate what they described as the “Tamil Genocide,” with counter-protests by Sinhala Buddhist activist groups who attempted to obstruct the gathering and raised allegations of foreign funding and extremist influence.
The event, held at a public beachfront location in Colombo, reportedly proceeded amid heightened security concerns as opposing groups gathered nearby, leading to verbal confrontations and accusations over the legitimacy and intent of the commemoration. Organizers of the event said it was intended to highlight human rights concerns, while opposing groups claimed it was politically motivated and linked to extremist propaganda.
Speaking on the sidelines of the protest, Sinhala Ravaya National Organization Secretary Madubhashana Prabath Ranahansa strongly criticized the organizers, alleging links to pro-Palestinian activist networks and broader extremist agendas. In a detailed statement, he drew controversial parallels between historical militant groups, claiming connections between Palestinian factions and past Sri Lankan militant training networks, while also asserting ideological and operational similarities between various armed movements. His remarks included allegations that certain global separatist narratives are used to justify political activism in Sri Lanka.
