Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe was granted bail today by the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court after being arrested last week on allegations of misusing public funds during his tenure from 2022 to 2024. The charges stem from a 2023 trip to London, where Wickremesinghe attended his wife’s graduation ceremony at the University of Wolverhampton, following official visits to Cuba and the United States. Authorities allege that state funds were improperly used to cover the costs of this private visit, including travel and security expenses.

The arrest has ignited significant public unrest. Over 1,000 protesters gathered outside the court, demanding Wickremesinghe’s release. Demonstrators, many dressed in black and waving black flags, chanted slogans and held banners reading “Immediately release ex-president Ranil Wickremesinghe.” Opposition lawmakers and political figures have condemned the arrest as politically motivated, arguing that it undermines democracy and targets political opponents.

Wickremesinghe, who served as president during a period of economic crisis, was credited with stabilizing Sri Lanka’s economy through stringent austerity measures. However, these policies were met with public backlash, and he now faces scrutiny under the anti-corruption agenda of current President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, who assumed office in 2024.

While awaiting trial, Wickremesinghe was hospitalized for dehydration and related health complications. He remains under medical care in the intensive care unit at Colombo National Hospital. Arrangements are being made for him to attend court hearings virtually.
