Taiwan President Lai Ching-te on Thursday reaffirmed the island’s commitment to defending its sovereignty and strengthening its military capabilities in response to China’s increasing regional assertiveness. The remarks came shortly after Beijing conducted rocket launches directed toward Taiwan during a military drill, raising concerns across the international community.

In his New Year speech broadcast live from the presidential office in Taipei, Lai emphasized the resilience of the Taiwanese people, stating that the world is watching to see whether Taiwan can defend itself against external threats. “The international community is watching to see whether the Taiwanese people possess the resolve to defend themselves,” Lai said.

The president’s address highlights Taiwan’s determination to maintain its security and sovereignty as tensions with China continue to escalate, underscoring the island’s strategic significance in East Asia.
